Fuller said there was a reason behind it when it was first revealed but didn't say what it was, whether that changed since he left, no idea.
It's either: a) the Starfleet logo in this iteration of Star Trek or b) it fits perfectly and seamlessly into TOS' world and suggesting otherwise is a personal insult to the producers who said in a tweet that everything will sync up perfectly
