Except this is Deadline we're talking about here, so something is certainly going on.
There's more to Tarantino films than "gore". If we could get a Trek film that features a scene as intense as the tavern sequence in INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS then it would be worth it. That tavern sequence had more excitement for me than anything in the new films, and it was just characters talking and reading each other's true intentions.
THIS IS SPECTACULAR NEWS!!!!!
Beyond thrilled that a film maker of the caliber of Quentin Tarantino may be making a Star Trek film...This will make the next Star Trek film into a major event. Well done J.J.
I don't think this would be moving up the flagpole unless Paramount felt they were at a nadir with the franchise. I think now is a good time to make a bold experiment even if it turns out to be a disaster.
No, just incredibly smart for bringing in a world class director to take charge of a franchise that lost some momentum after the last couple of films...This is exactly the bold type of move the series needs.
In a recent interview Quentin Tarantino made mention of what type of Star Trek film he would like to make/see...Tarantino’s idea is to “expand some of the great, classic episodes and just easily expand them to 90 minutes or more and really do some really amazing, amazing stuff”
Tarantino specifically mentions "City on the Edge of Forever" as an episode that would make a great movie. It's one of the great Trek classics”
I for one would LOVE to see Quentin Tarantino’s take on Star Trek and his idea of expanding City on the Edge of Forever could be spectacular...Imagine a world class director taking on that story with modern f/x.
If I were in charge of Paramount I would be on the phone with him the second I saw this article.

Shatner dosnt sound too optimistic about any involvement (a little dig at how he didn't appear in ST09 or STB?)

You bring up some valid points, but Paramount is desperate. They maybe willing to take a different approach than usual here.Tarantino is never gonna' direct this one.
He is basically an independant filmmaker. I doubt hard that he is willing to play by Paramounts' rules, which they'll inevitably impose, this being a multi-million dollar franchise now. Also he likes to write his movies himself, and direct his own dialogue in his own style. As soon as some "regular" Hollywood writers pen the script, I doubt he wants to direct it anymore.
Best case scenario: Tarantino has a really great concept for a movie, and the hired writers turn that into a really solid script, that is then directed by another competent, big-budget experienced director.
Also: This ain't gonna' take place in the Kelvin universe. That universe is only a faded memory in mainstream audiences' mind at this point. By 2020 it will simply be too old and too laden with backstory to attract new viewers. Except if it's a reboot of TNG or something.

The reason I think this could happen is because Tarentino could pull it off on a lower budget. It would be a dialog heavy movie, just like all his films. The lower budget would appeal to Paramount, and purely from a marketing perspective having the next ST movie directed by QT will generate lots of interest. You get the ST fanbase, plus the general audiences that just want to see an QT movie.
I'm sure Paramount dreams at night about Tarantino directing their next Trek movie. I just don't think Tarantino will be willing to work within in the given frameworks of this already continuity-laden franchise (specifically: Kelvin Trek). Only way it might be possible would be a total reboot (again, sigh), or if he does his version of TNG in the Kelvin timeline (aka still something completely different).
There are just too many real-world variables for me to believe he will really end up directing it. What I'm 1100% sure of is Paramount will be working off of Tarantinos concept and plot points! How much of them will survive executive meddling unto the silver screen, and how much Tarantinos original version and the by other people realized final version will have in common will be an entirely different debate.
No more with the present crew please.People who believe that the Kelvin films need to be rebooted right now are silly. Ten years from now? Sure. But I could see three more films being produced with the present "crew", before it's done.
A TMP - WoK style time jump of 10ish years would be plenty to establish a new different status quo for the Kelvin characters if Tarantino wanted to use those actors but not carry on the character development from ST'09/STID/STB.
