Would you like Saru to become the captain?

If Lorca ever leaves the show or even plays a new role on the show am I the only one who would like to see this? With the talk of diversity one thing we still haven't seen is our very first alien Captain character unless you could Calhoun from the "New Frontier" novels. I think he would be a interesting character to fill that gap between Lorca and what I think we all suspect to someday happen and that is Burnham.

Not only that but with the possibility of spin-offs i wouldn't even mine a Captain Saru series at some point. Maybe he command a research station or something or even another ship but you got to wonder if they will ever go with another non-ship based Trek series.

Saru is too inflexible in his thinking. He'd make a terrible Captain and not in the rouge, anti-hero sense like Lorca. He's better as a foil. If Lorca goes, I'd like to see Burnham as Captain. But, if that's not feasible due to her being a mutineer and (currently) having no rank then I'd like to see someone new.

Sure, why not? Or maybe they retrieve Georgiou from the multiverse ;)

You know I thought about that. Also thought about a pre-Burnham spin-off with Georgiou and Saru. Another thing is I like the idea of a Captain Saru series were he has a Georgiou from the mirror universe becomes his first officer or maybe one where he is trapped in a mirror universe with the Georgiou of that universe and they have no ship. A X-FIles type of show were they work as partners for some reason to be thought up at a later date.

He is too inflexible now but that would be part of his character arc. He would grow into being a better leader or he could end up being a bad captain that would be part of the second season arc they do. We have only seen glimpses of bad leadership in Trek over the years such as Harriman and the kid from "Valiant." Might be fun to explore that idea over a season.

I think he did a good job during the rescue of Lorca and i think there are the makings of a good captain in Saru. I think he needs more opportunities to shine as first officer though. He's got a bit of learning to do, something that he realises himself before he is ready for the big chair.

This is my opening to say I think out of all the DSC characters, Saru would be the one who'd fit in best on Rick Berman Star Trek. Because of that I think it would be odd to make him The Captain on Discovery.

Georgiou also would've fit into the Star Trek of Yesteryear but she was only around for two episodes to set up the contrast to characters like Burnham and Lorca.

I hope not. Saru is my least-favorite character on the show, and I have no interest in an alien captain. As a human, I draw the line at members of my own species for where I care about diversity. I'd rather see human captains.

He would be the worst captain ever. Every week when they encountered adversity he would turn tail and run.

His decision making ability has been pretty poor so far, and that is really the Captain's whole job, so no, he shouldn't be Captain.

He's not ready for the Captain's chair yet. But I think he's now well aware of that fact if episodes 5 an 8 are anything to go by. I don't see him as a coward. Overly cautious sometimes, perhaps? But retreat is often a viable strategy, especially if you don't have all the information you need to make a more informed decision.

Saru had been correct in advising a withdrawal in the first episode. It was a trap and they sprung it, initiating a costly war. On the other hand, he allowed his resentment of Burnham to cloud his judgment in ep 5. While he was successful at recovering Lorca, he did seem to acknowledge to himself at least that he also made some pretty bad mistakes in how he approached the situation. He's learning, which is a positive, I think.

But for now, he's not quite Captain material. This could eventually change.
