How could they have put that other couple together at the end of the show? Zero chemistry.

I can't answer that question for you ... although I guess this must have been more of a rhetorical question than a real one.
I personally don't mind any couples, not even C/7 but yeah when I first saw ENDGAME, it came as a surprise. I don't know if you've read the relaunch books but Christie Golden splits them up in the very first volume.

Watched Meld again yesterday. I'm pushing my luck lately. Have the series on re-watch with the DVDs and it is also running on TV. What is one to do?

"Drone" offered some beautiful moments. One was endearing and funny.
Just a question, if Seven was her "mother", who was his "father", Enseign Mulchaey or the Doctor or both? Indeed, if I remember well, as much Mulchaey's DNA as , the Doctor's mobile ermitter (which as assimilated) were used to create One, right?

I reckon the Ensign would be more the father given his DNA was 'harvested'. I liked the aspect of Drone that used the emitter though because it gave us an advanced drone. Much of what attracts me to Voyager apart from the cast and the setting of the Delta Quadrant is when they go even further into the future, so using 29th Century technology (the emitter) to give the drone enhancements just added to the story. One was a unique creation that inherited some of his mother's newfound humanity.

It's my head canon/personal interpretation that One's genetics were Ensign Mulcahey from the DNA sample that was taken and also I believe that some of Seven's DNA was with her nanoprobes (although they didn't say it) and got mixed in as well. That's why One didn't look exactly like the Ensign. And then the Doctor's mobile emitter was used as a template for the advanced Borg technology in his body.

That is how I see it too. I always figured some of Seven's DNA was part of One.

    Hi guys,

I can see that my DRONE wallpaper called for a little discussion, which is great. I'll come to that in a second.

But first things first  ... and since One would devastatingly lose in the Voyager hairstyle contest , let me react to this first:

Agreed a hundred and twenty per cent. But I guess in my case this is simply because we were so used to her hair being short for a long time ... and then we only had her for a few eps with the longer hair. But perhaps if she had stayed on Voyager, not only would she have found a way to the heart of all the Kes haters but in all probability we would have got used to her long hair as well.

One of the great things about Star Trek in general and about Voyager in particular is that these shows don't narrow down the definition of family on the traditional mother-father-child(ren) model. As a gay man, I can really appreciate that.

For example, if you think about Jadzia from DS9, and all her background history as a Trill, the complexity of their society and in this sense the complexity of what is considered to be family is amazing. The producers of DS9 were most of the time also more daring than those of the other Trek shows and they didn't even shy away from showing us a Lesbian relationship with Jadzia in REJOINED - which is not really Lesbian, is it, since Lenara used to her husband in an earlier life (or is it?) and so that episode is a positive proof of how the definition of family can be extended. (And she is in love with Voyager's Borg Queen - here's to the complexities of life!)

Voyager is even better than any other shows at taking the meaning of family to the highest possible level. This is apparent in basically every single episode of the show - how people who are not related by kin are forged into a family. And a remarkable one at that - even families that are related by blood could take a leaf out of Voyager's book. The great thing about that to me is that on VOY (both the show and the ship) they don't care who your parents are, whether you are male or female, if you have had two fathers and one mother ... etc. This really is a family in the widest possible sense of the word. No matter who you are, the operative word for them is "inclusion". An admirable quality if you ask me - and one you don't often find in real life situations.

In this sense, our beloved One is born in exactly the place that's best for him: in a welcoming atmosphere. And don't forget that this is largely due to Janeway. Had she not stopped Seven's suggestions to terminate One, he would never have existed. Going by some other crew members' reactions (B'Elanna in Engineering, for example), you needed a person of Janeway's calibre (and of rank too) to stop being hostile towards someone that you know nothing about. So One couldn't have been luckier to be born in exactly where he was.

Under such circumstances, it really doesn't matter who his parents are in the biological sense of the word (if we can talk about biological sense in the case of Borg drones). It seems that he is a unique individual - perhaps the most unique that Voyager has ever encountered. He has a biological father, a holographic father and a half human - half cyborg mother. What an ancestry! And what legacy as well! It's a pity we never find out about the latter - DRONE to me is really one of the worst wasted opportunities on VOY. Had they kept him like for ten or so episodes, a great and unique Voyager-Borg story arc could have been created.

Oh, by the way, One is not the first being that came into existence under irregular circumstances. Think of Tuvix. That guy had two fathers and no mother - quite unusual, isn't it? Even more so that in his case, his very existence was only possible by the sacrifice of his own parents. Maybe he is the more unique individual? Who can tell? One's parents remained more or less unharmed after all.

And since it seems that you like this topic PLUS the next DRONE wallpaper is about One's family tree anyway, I've decided to move it up for you. I hope you'll like it just as much as the first one. Enjoy!

We would've become used to the hair (Kes) I agree. I think in part the pixie hair suited Kes being a creature with a short life span. I think moth to the flame or butterfly. Kes resembling tinkerbell gave her a fragility in looks even though she became quite powerful. THAT was a loss to the show in my opinion, not letting Kes exploit her power.

Thomas Eugene, you are SO right with comments about family in Star Trek and how the roles of being in a family were so inclusive. Ocampa, Talaxian, Borg, Federation, Marquis, it mattered for little other than when Janeway 'mothered' for example it could have been toward Harry, or Kes, or Seven, she just took them under her wing. I think that is why the Good Shepherd is a clever little episode because it's a shout out to us that being family on Voyager this lone ship in the Delta Quadrant was the glue that helped them survive and want to survive. In an interactive way when I watch Voyager I get that feel good sense of familiarity.

One as a character was sadly wasted. One and even Suder two rather powerful presences, and I guess (as you mention) if Tuvix had been a character without the loss of Tuvok and Neelix he was a third. It's pretty amazing how in the space of one or two episodes the writers were capable of giving us creations you could connect to.
