He wasn't. He was just born that way.
How can this thread have gone on this long without anyone cracking off that one? OP walked right into it...

I like the idea that he ascends and becomes The Traveler from TNG.
They need a reason to drop the spore drive, if Stamets is ultimately fine then why drop it? If the effects on him are reversible and ultimately not that bad the spore drive should at least be an option for emergencies even if it is is not used regularly.
Maybe he won't die but if you see hysteria for no reason I question if you have even warched Discovery. Are you actually telling me Stamets is fine?
sounds like it could be a very edgy and fantastically dark comedy that I would love to watch. When there is a more diverse cast then it is more likely they will die off/be a spy or whatever else. We only have one straight white male in the main cast. If we had everything bad happen to him and everyone else get a free pass...
Due to, as I already mentioned, the disproportinate amount of LGBTQ characters that die, despite them being one of the smallest shown groups in media accounting for 10% of deaths. They would have to survive much more often to even make it even.
But I guess most people are more comfortable when they die and not stick around.
They don't make up 10% of characters on tv though, it's way less, so they are killed disproportionally often. So if LGBTQ people make up approximately 10% of the overall human population, would it then not also carry that they would represent 10% of deaths?
That doesn't make sense. Anthony Rapp is an actor, their whole job is to convincingly play another person. Gay people play straight characters and vice versa all the time. I haven't seen him in anything else, but I'm sure he could play a straight person with no problems whatsoever.I assumed it was because the actor who plays him obviously is and the producers just figured they might as well let him run with it to get a more genuine and convincing performance.
Rapp's most well known role prior to Discovery was playing a straight man in Rent (whose cast included a gay character played by Cruz). My only answer to the question in the topic, is "why not?".
The series was developed by a gay man, they said from the outset there was going to be a gay main character, why not Stamets?

I think it could be daring and dramatic if they did kill him off, and it was a real self-sacrifice. I mean like Spock. (But please ignore that Spock was resurrected later... which kind of cheapened his death.)I don't think he'll die.
Not really. Killing the gay character is a pretty cliched trope at this point.I think it could be daring and dramatic if they did kill him off, and it was a real self-sacrifice. I mean like Spock. (But please ignore that Spock was resurrected later... which kind of cheapened his death.)
A lot. He's a likable main character who has already risked all. Not sure how many of those there have been to form a "trope".
