Unity should have been the end. Any other video game franchise, it would have been. It was that bad. Assassin's Creed III, the previous low-water mark in the series, was a masterpiece in comparison.

It's a measure of just how much momentum and goodwill this 'secret history of the human race' saga has built up over the last decade, that it (barely) survived both that and last year's Michael Fassbender/Marion Cotilliard cinematic abortion. 2015's AC Syndicate did a lot to restore, if not the luster, at least some credibility.

So now, after an entire year longer to make than all the other games have had, and the crew behind Black Flag helming it, and now that the historic re-enactments have come too close to our own present time, we're reversing course and (in a soft kind-of-but-not-really-reboot) heading alllll the way back to 49 BCE, the age of Cleopatra (and the imminent rise of Julius Caesar's Rome). Back to the very first Assassin (a Medjay warrior named Bayek), his eagle sidekick Senu, and a man (or is it men?) in a blue mask.

And the mystery of just what lies under the Great Pyramid...

I'm a huge AC fan, and so far this looks and sounds like it has the potential to be one of the series' best games yet. I love the idea of going farther back in time. One my dream games since the Ezio series ended was an Ancient Rome AC game, but I think this could be even more interesting since Ancient Egypt isn't done as often as Rome.

If this does well we're probably going to see Ancient Rome very soon thereafter, since this game is taking place during Cleopatra's time, which was also the time of Rome's transition from republic to empire.

ACIII was not bad...
People didn't like the protagonist because he was very stoic and people in the USA didn't like the setting for some reason...
I liked it, the Homestead building was a fun change of pace with some fun side stories/missions...
And i picked up Unity about a year after it came out and it got patched, so i thankfully missed out on all the glitches etc...
I just pre-ordered the deluxe edition of Origins because i like the series in general...

to me the key to enjoying the franchise is to avoid burnout (the very AC-specific kind of Open World Fatigue) as they are on a yearly release schedule and the games are incredibly uniformly structured - also, the meta-narrative lost me after AC:B, which is a real bummer

(Black Flag and Syndicate were still pretty good, they just didn't stick with me the way the first three games did)

I really think they should have just dumped the whole modern day narrative after they finished Desmond's story.

Yeah, having played ACIII recently, I rather liked it. I thought it was rather refreshing, actually. I loved exploring the land and becoming more familiar with it over time. I thought what it did was actually pretty bold. I didn't really see a problem with the main character either. I'd consider him untrustful of the world he's in. He's from the outside looking in, perhaps reluctant to say too much to the wrong people, so he keeps a lot to himself, because of who he is. I felt that overall, the game had a lot of personality. Getting to know some of the characters on the homestead was pretty great.

And I'm currently playing ACII, but finding I miss a lot of the improvements and features from ACIII, especially characters like homestead characters.

So did anyone get the game today? I'm going to finish Syndicate before I get it.

Been playing it tonight. One thing I'm absolutely thrilled with so far is that as far as I can tell they finally dropped "full sync" bullshit the series has been saddled with ever since Brotherhood. Once again I can play an Assassin's Creed game the way *I* want to play it and not be penalized for it. :techman:

Played it yesterday for 4 hours, i like it, great enviroments...

That's really good to know. Currently playing through Brotherhood and I was surprised that shit went as far back as that. It somehow made you feel inferior for completing an objective a different way. Completing objectives should make you feel good that you're making progress. This is like "Oh, well, that's simply not good enough, sorry!"

The first AC turned me off to the whole series because of the fighting style. I then picked up Black Flag and really got into it that game, but didn't bother to play any of the ones thereafter. I was bored and picked up AC Origins last week and I really enjoy it.
