Discovery and "The Orville" Comparisons

And there's the guys that give every episode a 10.
Gotta balance it out.

Some people think it's a good show.
Some people think it's the best thing since sliced bread.
Some people think it's okay.
Some think it's bad.
And some think it's the worst thing since smallpox.

Haters gonna hate, and then there's the opposite.

And then there's me in the middle, that hasn't rated any episode past 8, but overall finds it more intriguing than where TNG, VOY, and ENT were in their first season.

Easpecially the abysmal first season of TNG. Sooooooooo corny those early episodes. So dull.

This thread has gone in a weird direction. I will say though I don't understand the concept of being a "good fan" of something by not criticizing it. It's applying the "logic" of sports fandom (something I've never understood - how does someone decide to like a team anyway?) and pouring it into a TV show, which very clearly is not an animate entity.

IMHO the best fans offer constructive criticism to whatever they like, because they want it to improve, not cheerleading.

Yes. I think it's more fair to approach the show on its own terms and judge it from there. Look at what's it's going for and determine if you think it's succeeding at it. The kind of criticism that's nonsense to me is folks like Marsh claiming the show is doing something wrong by not giving focus to that helmsman with the eye bracket.

Most people really do seem to grade on a curve much different than my own. I mean, for example, I like Deep Space 9 a lot - I think it's the best Trek show overall. But there were probably only around five perfect 10 shows across the entire show, and I'd probably rate less than a quarter of episodes an eight or better.

An eight doesn't mean an episode is a B basically, it means an episode is way, way above average, but still has a few flaws.

I'm amused by the concern for 1/10 votes when half of this forum is voting 8/10+ for every STD episode since the beginning no matter how shitty it is  IMHO it's equally as invalid
Well it's a timing thing, lol  I haven't watched any Orville and would love to. However I don't vote Discovery until I've seen it. It gets what it deserves from me, lol.

If the internet we have today was in 1987, just imagine how savaged it would have been by the vocal minority on those sites.

1987 internet didn't have the World Wide Web, but it had Usenet newsgroups. It wasn't as accessible as the Web, but TNG was very much savaged by some TOS purists.

Oh god, some of the old Usenet stuff...

By 1990, when I started to get involved in online stuff, there were three or four private subscription networks that had active sf and Star Trek sections where fans interacted with people who worked on various shows and with other writers. Compuserve, GEnie, Prodigy...

There's a bunch of bridge officers on Discovery that barely said 2 words in the entire series yet (black lady, robot guy, and the messed up eye lady that I can think of offhand)
Those extra characters don't need to be there for every episode then if we're not going to get to know them. Every other series has episodes devoted to each of the bridge officers.
We're almost half way through the season then we'll probably not see season 2 until 2019. Then on top of that half of the regulars on the bridge are there for decoration. :wtf:
:guffaw:

46 episodes. 7 seasons.

http://scriptsearch.dxdy.name/?page=results&query=({series|tng,}) and ({speaker|gates,})

Forty-six.

:guffaw:

In case you missed it, that's 46 episodes.
