this seems to be the perspective of the filmmakers as well, except that they made the mistake of stating before the show aired that it's set in the prime universe and have spent way too much time promising us that all of this will all slot into canon.

this show has got to find a way to back itself out of the prime universe, especially if the rumored spinoff comes to fruition.
As I said in another thread, this appears to be because the producers keep trying to do their own PR and are making some frankly amateurish mistakes, failing to properly manage their audience's expectations. They are, at this point, making alot of promises they may not be able to keep, and that is a really good way of generating frustration among your fanbase.

i mean, plenty of people here have already pointed out that the producers are damned if they do, damned if they don't. if they set it in the kelvin timeline, or a new timeline, or an anti-timeline, or something other than the prime timeline, some fans would freak out. but announcing it's set in the prime timeline, redesigning everything and introducing elements that need to be swept under the rug in order for the events of this series to fit within that timeline feels more like lip service than appeasing that group of fans.

the producers' intent trips me up each week and i hate it, but it does affect my appreciation for the series.

watching the kelvin timeline films: "oh that's what they did with the bird-of-prey, interesting..."

watching discovery: "that's supposed to be a bird-of-prey???!"

Well, they could set it in the prime timeline and not totally redesign everything...

Dear Discovery Producers,
Just do it. Third universe albeit with some shared backstory.
The differences are such, literally nobody's going to be happy with the eventual attempt to segway all this into the Original Series.
And I need a good night's sleep!
