Hopefully it's not a remake of the film trilogy. Setting it in that universe though would be ideal.

I asume this will be about Gandoff when he was younger and we find out he was kick-ass solider who just dabbled in magic at that age or maybe modern update set in a version of 2017 or maybe Sam has a kid that heads off for adventure.

Nine and a half hours (or so) of top-notch filmmaking is quite enough time to spend in Middle-Earth, thanks. I don't need to spend half an hour with Tom Bombadil, I don't need to get extensive flashbacks on Faramir, and I don't even need to see Aragorn negotiating with ghosts or the Scouring of the Shire, however cool it may be on the page. And I certainly don't need to see an elf-lady flirting with one of Bilbo's companions. Three movies (one of them extended) is quite enough for this whole world, Bezos! :p

But you forgot the Hobbit prequels and wasn't all of them extended on DVD? Also wasn't there once a cartoon?

    One word: Silmarillion.

But it better be more like HBO’s Game of Thrones and less like MTV/Spike’s The Shannara Chronicles.

All 6 Middle Earth films have extended cuts on both DVD and Blu-ray. Gaith probably doesn’t like the rest.
There was an animated LOTR movie in 1978 that was made by Ralph Bakshi no less! Unfortunately it only covered the Fellowship and the first half of Two Towers.

I have all six extended cuts. Don't need any more thank you.

For me, Jackson's original trilogy is so good and so definitive (I wasn't a fan of the Hobbit series unfortunately) that this feels as superfluous as someone planning to do another adaptation of The Godfather. And at least The Godfather wasn't released in relatively recent memory.

However, if this isn't another adaptation of the three LOTR films but simply a series set in middle earth, I'd give it a go.

    This ain't happening, people.

Christopher Tolkien is the executor of the Tolkien Estate, and he has a hardline negative view of his father's works being adapted into other mediums and will not allow any more adaptations to be made.

Warner Bros. doesn't have television rights to the franchise, and the chances of Christopher Tolkien giving therm said rights are nonexistent.

Yes please. I would watch the heck out of a Silmarillion tv series.

As others have said, if it's a remake of the original trilogy or the Hobbit I'm not really interested but if it's the Silmarillion or even original stories inspired by Tolkien, hell yeah!

As the article notes, though, the Tolkien Estate is involved and trying to sell the television rights:

I wonder what it is that CJRT and the estate have put on the table that's worth that much and doesn't encompass everything.

Have you actually read the books?

Gandalf wasn't human - so, unless they completely re-write the character - that's right out...

The whole idea seems like a waste of time and money since it will be compared to the movie series and will certainly come up short.

No I haven't read the books but then when it comes to bringing books to tv and movies you always can make changes that you think might work better for that medium. Plus while you clearly want the popularity of the movies/books to bring people to the show you also would most likely want to add some new wrinkles to make your show feel more unique and not just like your copying everything from the books or the movies.
