Discovery and "The Orville" Comparisons

It was good, too. The least humor of any episode so far, and the big joke, juvenile as it was, was pretty funny. I'm loving Dr. Finn, and this was a nice spotlight for Isaac.

Really glad this show is getting a second season.

I prefer a shorter season, honestly. Though I'm worried about CBS trying to poach writers from it for Discovery.
I think you're being facetious here but it did cause me to think a bit. I'm only familiar with three of the Orville writers, Goodman, Brannon, and Seth.

If DSC announced tomorrow that David Goodman was coming on board the writing staff for season 2, I wouldn't scream bloody murder (even though he wrote my least favorite season 3 Ent episode). Brannon Braga, however, I would scream, and scream loudly. I just think he has done enough damage to the Trek franchise. As for Seth, I'v gone on record in this very with my opinion, that I don't think he should even be writing scripts for the Orville, much less for a high drama show like DSC.

Well, Brags wrote an episode of Orville that was considerably more compelling than the Discovery writers have managed thus far.

STD is hardly a "high drama" show - It's hard to imagine what its storytelling would offer to anyone who's not already fascinated with the Trek milieu.

Interesting characters. Technology that has some rather disturbing implications in terms of application. An imperfect world that is struggling to become better.

Star Trek is just a bonus for me.

As I said in the episode thread, the plot was straightforward and kinda dumb. Only the great characterization and stellar acting saved the episode.
It's nice we're getting more character development. There's a bunch of bridge officers on Discovery that barely said 2 words in the entire series yet (black lady, robot guy, and the messed up eye lady that I can think of offhand)

The show isn't about those characters. This comment is nonsensical. It's like saying that Kyle and Desalle and Leslie didn't get enough character development.

WTF?

Those extra characters don't need to be there for every episode then if we're not going to get to know them. Every other series has episodes devoted to each of the bridge officers. I assumed they would eventually get around to doing it here too. I'm not even sure what Discovery is supposed to be about. :barf:

Discovery isn't about the bridge officers.

That's been the premise since before day one.

No wonder you can't enjoy the show. They're incidental. Like Random Communications Officer Guy.

Yeah the focus I'm seeing so far is Burnham's redemption, messing around with the spore drive, and watching how far Lorca will go to "win the war" with the Klingons.

The first season was always planned for thirteen episodes from everything I've heard. I prefer a shorter season, honestly. Though I'm worried about CBS trying to poach writers from it for Discovery.
The Orville can keep people like Brannon Braga. I wouldn't want him touching any Star Trek project again.

Anyone trying to apply old rules to this iteration of Trek won't get much out of it.

It's kind of refreshing to have a new Trek show dropping the Berman era crew dynamic where all the main characters were conveniently all the senior officers. Not only is the captain NOT the focal point this time but there are other archetypes not part of the main cast like the CMO, helmsman, tactical, or communications officer. This is a show saying we don't need to know those people, that what we have is enough. If eye bracket lady never gets an episode about her I won't feel cheated.

I like that because I think Berman era dynamic defined too many of the characters by their posts. Like if there's an episode about Dr. Crusher it's likely going to be about her profession rather than her own character. If it's about Torres it's likely about fixing things (or being an angry Klingon). DS9 was sort of an outlier where the characters were not as defined by their posts. I struggle to think of a Dax centric episode that's strictly focused on her role as science officer.

I could not bring myself to fucking care about the miraculous spore drive. Or the War Against Halloween Masks, either. I was kind of drawn in by Lorca, but underneath his sinister behavior he's motivated the same way all Starfleet characters are motivated - he's working for the Greater Good to win the war.

Cograts to Orville for the second season, good news.

Both episodes written by the same writer, Tracy Torme (son of Mel).

Yeah, and Roddenberry was too fond of his work for the comfort of at least one producer in the hierarchy. He had a bulls-eye on his back after "Conspiracy."

Well, good job Mr. Braga.

My, how times have changed...

It seems like people nostalgic for the TNG/Voyager/Enterprise versions of Star Trek are enjoying The Orville more than Discovery. Nothing wrong with that as it all comes down to personal preference. It's just funny since Voyager and Enterprise (and Braga) got A LOT of hate on the internet when the shows were airing for being stale.

Some or all of that could be blamed on Paramount. Do we know for sure how much control Braga & Berman really had?

Plus Braga was only co-executive producer on VOY for 2 years.

i think a lot of it comes down to baggage. i think people van gloss over and forgive a lot with orville because it isnt trek and doesnt have the baggage. as funny as orville is, it certainly isnt compelling and barely serious. its just easier.
