Discovery and "The Orville" Comparisons

Yep, there's that in virtually every online poll.

I'd be tempted to point out that unhappy people participate in these things out of proportion to satisfied customers, but that doesn't explain how strongly positive audience reaction is to some shows and movies - like, say, The Orville. ;)
A negative experience is more firmly recorded in the brain than a positive one. I certainly understand the bias, and the appeal of one show over another.

That doesn't mean there are not biases for and against each show.

Haters lashing out at Discovery!

People are allowed to watch the show and express their anger at it, right?

As the weeks go by, the ratings for the two shows have moved a few points further - the more folks who vote, the less each vote affects the percentage and the harder it is "downvoters" or "upvoters" to move the needle. How many hundreds of voting accounts would have to be created to move the vote five percent in either direction?

It probably is true that negative voters are more likely to compose a message to go along with their vote than happy viewers are, so you're going to see a disproportionate number of "It sucks!" posts.

Negativity is far more common of a driver for commentary than positive feelings.

There's no way to prove this, but if The Orville was called "Star Trek: The Orville" its audience score would be pretty similar to Discovery's right now. You would have people complaining about it being more of the same old tired Star Trek. People would also be complaining that the hated Braga is an executive producer. Can't he just leave Star Trek alone? ;)

I wish to reply to this comment in a negative fashion.
Why?

I don’t know.
Hater ;)

I'm so tired of Braga and his constant Star Trek...something. ;)

There's no way to prove this, but if "Canadian Bacon" was called "circle ham" then people would complain about their Egg McMuffins being too bland and non-descript.

As noted elsewhere, any new Trek project is going to have to thread the needle between "Hey, this isn't like the old stuff" and "Hey, this is just the same old stuff." You're never going to find a sweet spot between those two poles that will satisfy everyone.

I can't wait to see what Trek scripts they rip off next season.

Probably relatively few.

Orville has a far less difficult task, being funny and inappropriate jokes are what SM does, and it isn't trek so it doesn't have any of that baggage to deal with,

Season one will be safe-ish. season two will be a little more free IMO

their second season will be just like every other sci-fi show, just ripping off sci-fi in general as opposed to ripping off trek.

Happy for all Orville fans that it got renewed. Really hope the 'Praise Orville in a way to bash DSC' will fade away soon, but for now, sci fi seems to be back on tv, which is a good thing!

It will, there will always be cranky holdouts and trolls but give it time. The opposite will also subside.

From Deadline:

Seth MacFarlane’s space adventure series The Orville has been picked up for a second season by Fox. The decision comes seven episodes into The Orville‘s 13-episode first season. Because of the show’s elaborate production and post-production, including visual effects, The Orville had been intended for a limited season, and the early renewal will give it a head start on Season 2 whose exact length is TBD.

“Once again Seth has struck a powerful chord with viewers,” said Fox Entertainment president Michael Thorn. “He has delivered a series full of optimism, drama and his trademark humor. We want to thank him and the rest of the talented cast, as well as the producers and crew, for an incredible first season. We can’t wait to see where The Orvilletravels in the second.”
