When Do You Want To See Burnham Become The STD Captain?

Even if she somehow becomes an officer again, she probably won't ever be offered her own command. Just like Worf after "Change of Heart."

In the novels, Worf is on track to become a captain.

I kind of lost track of the novelverse years ago just because of the sheer volume of material. :(

Kor

This was several years ago, I dropped out of the 22nd and 24th century novels much for the same reason I'm unhappy with Discovery, they feel dramatically empty.

I still pick up the occasional TOS novel because I'm a junkie.

A lot of time had passed and he proved himself capable.

Well, no. The novel writers just didn't care what was written in the TV series. Instead of giving us a fresh character, they gave us more Klingon bolognium.

The writers do care.

it is clear in their writing. Worf even disagrees with Picard making him First Officer because of was mentioned earlier in this thread, and has character development over it.

Most of the DS9 novels cast are new characters.

I'm happy for Lorca to stay as captain. He might have some hard edges now, but so do a lot of the other characters to varying degrees. So long as he mellows over time he should be fine.

Plus Jason Isaacs is too good an actor for the franchise to let go so easily.

The character of Burnham, at least as we've seen her so far, has no business getting anywhere near the Captain's chair.

That's why they are writing Lorca the way they are. To show he's an even worse fit for the Captain's chair (despite Issacs being a great fit for a Captain role).

Lorca being written as a shady villain is an attempt to elevate Burnham as his eventual foil and replacement.

IF she becomes captain, not "when." Who says she has to become captain?

I remember another thread that basically claimed that anyone who stayed at Lieutenant-level for their whole career isn't Starfleet material, because you're just supposed to keep going for promotions. But plateauing at that level is quite common in real navies. After a while, promotions just aren't automatic any more

In Starfleet, the rank of Lieutenant can carry a good deal of responsibility, such as being a department head. Plenty of officers might be quite content to stay in that role until they retire. Not everybody needs to become a captain. Otherwise ships would end up with several officers with the rank of Captain... which we did see in the TOS movies, but I think that would be an unusual case.

I doubt she'll be captain in the foreseeable future. It was a big part of the premise that our lead isn't the Captain, I don't think they're planning to ditch that anytime soon. There's no indication that the writers are drawn to command-the-bridge centric old school Trek storytelling. They seem to actively prefer the setup they have, a sort of Lower Decks Extra.

I don't want Burnham to be the captain.

I don't think she should be forced to shoulder the blame for starting the war - obviously that wasn't her fault. But regardless of her reasons for doing so, she mutinied against her captain. That shouldn't be simply glossed over.

Not even if Burnham was right.

There is no realistic way for Burnham to make captain.

That said given the "quality" writing so far I fully expect them to just ignore that and make her captain anyways.
I disagree completely. They know what they're doing. Or else they would have recommissioned her and given her a rank.

Maybe she'll be Captain in the series finale in 7 years.

Doubtful. The female and gay producers of this series definitely want a Female lead in power and command.

They want to portray the Straight White Male as an inept war monger who shouldn't be the president..err Captain.

I'd be fine with that, but the Burnham character and Sonequa are total crap.

Hmmm... That's some alternative thinking for sure.
