Burnham is on a journey of self-discovery as we've seen from the very beginning. She has a bit of a Space version of Borderline Personality Disorder as she's continually tried to imitate the people around her whether they're Sarek, Georgiou, or Captain Lorca to an extent. Now only after discovering she didn't let down any of her mentors is she starting to become someone unique.

I think people's biggest issue with Star Trek: Discovery is everyone expects everything illustrated NOW when this seems like a show which needed either tighter focus on Michael or a longer number of episodes.

I don't want to speak for Mr Awe, but I personally have no problem with objective criticisms. It's the ones who nitpick things, then are proven wrong, but continue to nitpick. There are also the ones who have the same complaints every episode about it not being Star Trek (for example, it's too dark). It's not going to change.

The fact that it's dark is an objective criticism. And it's also a legitimate one as a subject of discussion, because it did get much lighter in the last episode.

Ash Tyler (Voq) is build up as a waaay too perfect boyfriend. I have a harder and harder time to imagine how a klingon spy would ever be able to be such a perfect human being. This might be more of a case of "sleeper Cylon agent" (from BSG), that maybe Voq was "melted" with a real human being, who doesn't even know about his heritage at this point? In this episode "Voq" would have helped Mudd to turn over the ship to the klingons. I don't know, just speculation at this point, but I'm interested to find out what the creators have planned in the long run.

The fact their relationship IS perfect is why I'm calling "The Manchurian Candidate" as the way it's going to go. L'Rell is going to activate his sleeper agent programming and he's going to suddenly awaken to being Voq with memories of being Ash Tyler and get torn between them.

Which is the way it should be.

As for why they couldn't sense he wasn't human--the answer is SCIENCEEEEEEEEEEEEE. ALIEN SCIENCE.

So I see a lot of party outrage! I liked it overall, but I get the negative response, in that I agree they went a tad overboard with all the "they party just like we do today!" indicators.

It made me think of that famous Coco Chanel quote -- before you leave the house, look in the mirror and remove one accessory.

Someone needed to give this sequence one last pass and drop one element from the edit. I would have cut the shots of beer pong. That's all it would have taken to go from "trying a bit too hard" to "just right."

6. As time loop episodes go this was pretty disappointing. Tell me a secret you didn't tell anyone else is elementary stuff as plots go.
Lorca is sitting! Is that a sign of weakness?

Time crystals... Groan. Wonder if this will be the new thing in season 2 when they can't use the spore drive anymore.

Please stop referring to Discovery as "STD"; the official abbreviation is DSC.
Nope, I will call it as I like. DISCO.

That argument is bunk. It's like trying to defend "reappropriating" the Swastika .

Yes because that's totally the same thing.

*pause*

That was sarcasm by the way.

It's true what they say: any discussion about the appropriate message board abbreviation for a franchise's 7th series is over as soon as someone invokes the Nazi's.

Gave me fond flashbacks to DS9's capriciously used Orb Of Time!

I'm surprised people didn't like the party scene, I thought it was great and made the ship seem more believable. Besides, STD desperately needed something like this to lighten up the mood.

I quite liked the party scene. It seems like it might be one of the few examples in Trek where the participants looked like they were actually having fun. And it was cool that the disco lights were visible on the outside of the ship. That was a nice touch. Really drives home all those times in past iterations where it was obvious that they were just reusing the same exterior shots over and over again.

The one thing about the party scene that I found a little jarring, though, was the apparently wounded officer in the wheelchair. No idea what happened to the character, but they usually portray medical technology as having advanced beyond that kind of thing (with the obvious exception of the Pike; that crazy, de-aging Admiral; and broken Worf before the experimental surgery).

Neelix not having lung replacements.
Kelvin Pike being wheelchair bound

We could go on for all the other times.

But my headcanon is that Star Trek is sort of like Red Queen Syndrome writ large.

As soon as they find a cure for cancer, they find space cancer that they can't cure. Dude might have been hit by neuro-disruptor damage or other nonsense that can't be repaired.

There's also the possibility the guy isn't crippled for life but maybe 3 or 4 months while they grow him a new spine.

Which is still a sacrifice.
