No salutes

They're done the "Captain on the bridge" thing on and off over the years. I seem to recall Kirk getting greeted that way in the fifth movie, and I think they done it on DISCOVERY once or twice.

Kirk also got "Captain on the bridge" in TUC, twice.
And in ST:ID.

A quick and sloppy search of chakoteya.net seems to indicate that, over the years, it has been most common in VOY and DS9 (on the Defiant).

I think they just wanted the cast to interact with each other with a sense of personal familiarity regardless of rank, and saluting conveys personal distance.

Rank conveys distance in itself. The writers just picked and chose certain aspects of the military, which is fine. Future fiction can portray whatever it wants. Things change over time, after all.

They might salute, but we almost never see them depicted in a circumstance where it would be appropriate.

The only one I can think of would be a promotion ceremony, or a change of command ceremony "I relieve you, sir." "I stand relieved."

If there was a conscience decision by Gene to not show saluting, they inadvertinently made Star Trek more accurate to the military than 90% of Hollywood depictions, who always show soldiers and sailors saluting indoors, and wearing their cover ....under ^ cover.

Starfleet personnel stand at attention when addressing an officer "Mr. Kim, at ease before you break something." and they stand at parade rest. They even show people standing at "parade pretty" and all jacked up just like happens in the real world :)

The perfect scenario for a casual salute would be an enlisted person walking past an outside on the grounds at Starfleet command. Or a Jr. Officer walking past a senior officer.

Never found a problem with salutes, possible to call it enough after a while unless different sequence or series are met. Might just should get one of those door chimers that get in the sell categories for the genre. Found that neat at least.

The only "salute" I remember was Kirk in Star Trek V, at the close of his conversation with Admiral Bob (I think.) That was done in such a way as it could have been tongue in cheek, so take it for what it's worth.

Traditions change over time.
If you compare all the lost traditions from the armies and military of early history to now, we have done away with many old traditions. It is more then feasible to conclude that the salute, as well as many other things, would be something that is done away with by the time Star Trek takes place.
It was also mentioned before, saluting does not really occur on ships.

Starfleet could very well be the "military" of the future. However, that does not mean it would be anything like what we consider our military to be today. It would change and take on new responsibilities, and would probably lose many as well, as reasons for many things would become obsolete. Starfleet has always been a very more relaxed militaristic type setting compared to what we consider a military today. Also, I don't believe as many of the Doctors, Scientists, Engineers, and other people who do serve in Starfleet would want to if it were to be a more hard-core militaristic type of service. That just wouldn't fit into the Federation.

Most memorable salute...'Live Long and Prosper' with thumb out and 2 sets of 2 fingers parting. From Spock in the Star Trek Original Series.

This could be the answer to the question in that "is Starfleet military or not" thread.

Not really. I'm pretty sure we've been over that territory too lol

They don't have bugle calls either. Some shit just goes extinct

They do have ruffles and flourishes, though ("The Savage Curtain").

Yeah. And though the hand salute does seem to have gone extinct, a security honor guard does some kind of a present arms, which is also a salute, in "Journey to Babel."

I have posted this image before when this came up, but it gives an idea of how the hand salute has already evolved. In this photo from the early 1890s, we see US Navy officers giving a variety of less formalized salutes, from actually lifting the hat to touching the brim or visor, and one using the left hand. It also shows how the hand salute is tied to headwear, which (mostly) has disappeared as a part of uniforms in Star Trek.
