News Seth MacFarlane’s The Orville

Just a theory, but maybe FOX is happy with the show and although no official announcement they want a full season so they are trying to close the gap in dead time between the last episode filmed and more new ones which will be filmed by re-running one or more episodes.

Nice recap of the first 6 episodes:

Interestingly, there's not a joke in the entire eight minutes or so of recap content.

There's not much humor in the promo for "Majority Rule," either.

Fox may be slightly adjusting its marketing for the show.

And, while I'm sure one shouldn't read any specific intention into this, I notice that Fox has labeled this video "Season 1." :D

Good observation. It would seem Fox is marketing the show as just an adventure/scifi rather than a comedy to appeal to scifi fans. Watching the recap, I found myself thinking that the orville crew have already had some interesting adventures in just 6 missions. The show definitely works as an adventure/scifi show.

Watching that video you can really get the impression that the Orville isn't a comedy series at all. :D
Really interesting cut. Trying to reach a different set of viewers with it?

Probably trying to emphasize the aspect of the show they understood initially, yeah.

They wanted to draw in the widest possible audience. I think they 've settled in a little with regard to who's really interested. ;)

I know this is sacrilege (and something I dare not say on in the Discovery forum), but I haven't looked forward to a show on a weekly basis the way I do The Orville, since probably season four of TNG.

Yep, same here. It always puts a smile on my face and I always come away feeling happy and satisfied. I'm always looking forward to seeing what these zany characters are going to be doing next. To me the show is a bit like Supergirl, in the sense that it has a sunny disposition, that a show in this day and age doesn't have to be dark in order to be successful.

The recap video was just touching on the major plot points, and none of the jokes have really impacted the plot.

I'm wondering what the odds are that The Orville may deliberately retool so that the comedy quotient is dialed severely back... The feedback seems to indicate that people would receive it better if they did that, but is Seth really dead set on having things just as they are? That's why I'm really interested in seeing where the rest of the season goes. I'm okay with comedy but it has to be integrated with the story and not feel like "insert dick joke here".

Another good example is Futurama, which remains by and far my favorite science-fiction television comedy (haven't seen Red Dwarf yet and Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is stronger in audio and book forms). It balances the comedy with the drama (and science) very well and knew when to focus on one over the other.

If you check out "Red Dwarf", please note:

It's painfully unfunny for the first season and-a-half; it improves some in the last half of season two, then picks up in season three. Some folks don't like the later seasons before it vanished.

Season ten is a real let down aside from one episode. These last two seasons have been good -- not great, but good.

Avoid the two failed American pilots of it like the Plague.

I mostly agree. All the series' can be funny if you get British humor. Series' 3 and 4 were the best.

I'm in the UK i've only managed to see the pilot but I am very interested to see more.

This is set in 2418, several years after Online is supposed to be... so could one unofficially count it as part of their ST universe?!

Yeah, I've heard it had a rough start, so I'll keep it in mind when I eventually watch it.

And it's just common sense to avoid any attempts by Americans to remake popular British productions. Life on Mars, Coupling, Doctor Who, etc....(although In Doctor Who's case, we at least got Paul McGann).

I think the show would lose something if it lost the humor.
