True, but it would've been a lot less painful. Just annoyed that Russell didn't get his home run, but Taylor did.

Yeah, Strasburg was terrific today despite just getting over the flu (I have no reason to believe he didn't). Definitely hoping Hendricks will get better support than this game.

Yankee hell burning has to wait a little longer, it seems.

Poor Cleveland. Not only did they lose the ALDS but the tragic Cleveland Browns are in the cellar. Again.

I wonder if Joe Girardi's blunder in the second game ironically helped galvanize the Yankees. He was getting roundly trashed in the media and his players defended him and played out of their 0-2 hole. Girardi's contract is also up at the end of this season so maybe that had something to do with bats and pitchers waking up, too.

^This latest surge notwithstanding, I think Girardi is gone if the Yankees don’t reach the WS. I’ve always thought David Cone would make a solid manager. He knows how to handle the media and has the respect of the Yankees fan base. However, I think he likes his analyst gig, so he probably won’t be back in uniform anytime soon.

Okay Astros, beat the Yankees. A sweep would be nice

Historically speaking, pitchers haven't made for particularly good managers. The best pitcher-turned-manager would probably be, ironically, the recently fired John Farrell.

    yuck.

Good players rarely make good managers as well, with a few exceptions. Got by on things like 'skill' a lot more, so didn't have to think about things as much. Best managers, in general, seem to be the marginal position players that scrapped along for a while, but never made it big. They still have something to prove in baseball that they couldn't prove with their bat. Spent more time on the bench watching, probably got cut or traded a few times and saw more of the business side of the game.

    My two cents, anyway.

It's the trendy pick at the moment, but curious about Alex Cora as new Sox manager. Was always known as a smart player, was scrappy utility guy, has managed somewhat in the Caribbean, and currently Astros' bench coach. Think he could be interesting. Personally thought Dave Martinez was an interesting candidate last time around, worth another look.

Not overly interested in Varitek at the moment, still too close to the players / not far enough removed. Same reason I wouldn't want to see an Ortiz hitting coach right away. Eventually, sure; guy knows a thing or two. Just needs time to breath and separate from the currently players.

Another Taylor home run has the Nats up 4-1. That could be it. This year's Cubs have not been a come from behind team and have not proven they "want it" more than the next team.

ETA: Well wipe the egg off my face. The Cubs are ahead 8-4. Finally showing some desire to win.

ETA²: Davis with a 7 out save to preserve the 9-8 Cubs win. Strikes out Harper to end the game.

Or a team led by Dusty. They do tend to fall apart when they need to win the most (2003 Cubs?).

I never thought I would say this, but I look forward to the World Series so I can bet back to the Fox sportscasters (specifically Joe Buck and John Smoltz) because the sportscasters for TBS are awful. I long for the days of Don Sutton, Skip Caray, Joe Simpson, and Pete Van Wieren (even they largely did the Braves games).

Yankees are in a hole but they seem to rise from adversity. I still like the Astros to come out on top but I’d pick NY to win game 3. Sabathia vs Morton is a favorable matchup.

I'd be hard pressed to find a broadcasting team so bad that I'd actually prefer Joe Buck over them.

I actually don't mind Joe Buck as much as I did when he was with Tim McCarver, who was pure awfulness. I think he's a good match with John Smotlz, who's an excellent analyst.

This is why I like to buy the World Series on BluRay (as opposed to iTunes) - so you can overlay either team's radio feed on top of the visual broadcast. You never have to listen to Joe Buck.

(I don't have cable, so I can't watch the WS "live")

Then you're missing out on the awesomeness that is John Smoltz. Your loss.

Joe Maddon was ejected in the bottom of the seventh for arguing a call reversal at home plate, where Contreas blocked the plate with leg while fielding the throw, which prevented Culberson from tagging home plate. The reversal was the right call (out to safe) based on the rules, but it's a dumb rule. I don't blame Maddon for being pissed about the reversal.

I can't imagine hating myself so badly that I'd lay a John Stirling audio feed over anything I'm doing. As bad as Joe Buck can be, at least he's TRYING to not be a douche. Stirling has decided to go the other direction with it, he's awful.
