Episode 5-9 titles revealed

I love it when people try to defend DSC by making fun of Trekkies who were complaining about TNG back then in 1987-88...

...and then the same people try to defend DSC by saying that TNG sucked ass back in 1987-88!!!

What? It's true:
- Many fans didn't care for had similar complaints when TNG first aired...that are similar to the complaints EVERY new Star Trek series has gotten since TOS. [Yet, TNG did manage to attract new fans much to the dismay/chagrin of original TOS fans who thiought that could never happen...]

AND

- That TNG's first two seasons (the first more than the second) SUCKED A$$ - and local stations did things (like sandwiching new TNG episodes between two TOS episodes when airing them to try and get original fans to keep watching.)

And thus we're where we are at today: The 'new Star Trek series' cycle is repeating itself for (counting TAS) the SIXTH time, with some older fans who don't care for ST: D - who also will NEVER believe that it could cause new fans to enter the 'Star Trek' fold - or that it will ever be accepted as "true" Star Trek.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.:rommie:

starmike, it's not easy when you have hopes to enjoy something and it isn't working for you. It's not ranting or choosing to be negative, it's just how it is filtering back to you..
I can appreciate that sentiment to a degree...But it's every thread! Even one about bloody episode titles are filled with complainers! Surely people can see how that may be a touch aggravating of us who are interested in discussing the show without endlessly having to defend it! Fans are entitled to complain undoubtedly... There are some parts of Disc I find problematic and parts of the first four eps I have not enjoyed...And some of the criticism fans have posted I have agreed with....But if something wasn't working for me that I had hopes for - I wouldn't choose personally - to spend so much time- as some many anti-Discovery fans seem to be doing on here - posting on every single Disc thread, about how much I hated it Isn't there a particular thread for that?

We're all Star Trek fans, but we all have our favorite eras and crews, which is why we bother to post what we don't like about the new Star Trek show. Or about what we do like. We're Star Trek fans, we can't help ourselves. Moths to light and all that stuff.

I see this quote attributed to Muir everywhere online, but nobody seems to be able to tell which book, essay, or whatever it actually came from.

Kor

Yeah, I don't know. Maybe it's like the Voltaire quote and he never actually said it? I don't really care enough about John Muir to find out. I know that it's commonly attributed to him though.

I think we just found DSC’s new theme song.

Certainly, it’s more memorable than the actual theme. Every time I try to remember how it goes, I always end up thinking of Michael Giacchino’s theme for ST09.

Thinking througgh these i think back to last week where the episode title could apply to two different parts of the story.

So next week with choose your pain obviously torture would be one possible place it applies however what it is also applies to ripper? Maybe his situation isn't so cut and dry and there isn't a right answer but a choice to be made?

Then the next few are intesrting in that we deal with sanity and forgetfullness and I wonder where those will be going?

That’s because they’re so insecure about the new show that they feel they must diminish everything old in order to boost the new flavor of the month.

Not for me. I've never ever liked the way Enterprise played out and always felt Voyager missed more than it hit, but that has nothing to do with Discovery. There are a great number of things about DSC i'm not keen on, but I also think the show has great promise. Episode 4 in particular showed me that DSC has Star Trek in it's heart with the very horta-esque tartigrade story. Which I am really looking forward to seeing that played out further. Also Episode 5 looks like it might have a very strong classic Trek vibe, in line with episodes like Chain of Command,

Except for TOS, I didn't like any of the pilots or the first seasons of any of the shows. But all of them had episodes later on that I really liked.

Indeed. I think TOS is the only show in any of the series that had a really really strong first season. For most of the later shows it seems like they were trying to find their own heart and soul for at leas the first 20 episodes before they really started kicking off. TNG has quite a few good ones in season one and two, but overall they didn't hit "consistent" quality until season 3 and 4. Same for DS9. Voyager I think took the longest to find itself, but what it found never appealed to me. Same for Enterprise. It took until it's 4th season to find the pieces of itself that really were working and by then it was game over.

I do love these old school episode titles. I hope they keep up this tradition going into the second season... and maybe start including them within the episode itself on screen.

Um... TNG had stellar ratings right out of the gate and was renewed for a second season in late November of 1987. I know of no markets in this part of the country (the Midwest) that ran TNG between episodes of TOS. TNG was part of Paramount's syndication block and usually ran with War of the Worlds and Friday the 13th: The Series.

TNG, for the entirety of its run, was never in fear of being cancelled due to ratings.

TOS had a great first season (although the first portion, before Gene Coon came on, was a bit hit or miss)
TNG was nearly unwatchably bad. I mean, the episode with the Bynars was the only actually good one the entire year.
DS9 was acceptable. Only about a quarter of the episodes were genuinely bad, although many of the characters were not likable yet by design or because the writers hadn't figured them out.
Voyarger was mediocre and boring
Enterprise was mediocre and boring

Exactly. It's unreasonable to expect discussions to be only with like-minded fans.

Lethe could refer to this TOS character Lethe
It's a Greek mythological reference to the river of forgetfulness in Hades and the goddess of forgetfulness and oblivion. The ancient Greeks believed you would drink from the river before being reincarnated so that you would forget your past life and start over as a blank slate.

So the TOS character (given her characteristics) and the episode title are both based on the mythological reference.

I've seen you incite arguments on this forum.
Nah, it's cool, I don't need to read the rantings of someone who's here just to be negative.
You also don't need to comment on it or accuse them of inciting arguments. If you believe someone is actually doing that (and he wasn't there) then you can notify on their post and let the mods handle it. But it's not your place to make such accusations yourself.

I think Lethe (the episode) may involve what's being discussed in the Voq speculation thread.

I disagree. But then, anecdotally, I've had the DSC theme stuck in my head over the past two weeks. It keeps playing over and over again in my mind. My son and I have sung along to the credits (he does a whole emo dance thingy to it which is just adorable). Just like my hubby and I singalong to the Game of Thrones credits. "Peter Dincklage, Peter Dincklage..."

The part which has been sticking with me, which we 'sing' to most is from the 46 sec mark:

So, as far as this Trek fan is concerned, the DSC main theme is catchy as hell. If you asked me right now I couldn't hum the TNG, DS9 or VOY themes to you, but I haven't rewatched them lately, so that is probably why. TOS on the other hand, I can sing from memory. Oh, and I am one of those weirdos who liked the Enterprise theme song fine.
