New photos from episode 4 'The Butcher...'

Well they said the show was about her rise through the ranks. What they didn't say was she'd be busted down to nothing and have to start from scratch. She sort of of a reverse Kelvin Kirk. ;)

At first I thought that there's no way in hell that she could get her rank back after being sentenced to life in prison for mutiny and other charges, then I started to wonder if in hindsight, high ranking members of Starfleet started to think that she was right and they should have blown the Klingon sarcophagus ship to smithereens right away. Maybe it made it a little easier for Lorca to sell his story that she's needed to help win the war.

I think it depends on how it's done. I'm thinking of the way they handled Sharon/Athena's reinstatement in BSG. I like that they made it a process. However, Athena wanted her rank back. Burnham might not.

Technically, it wasn't 'back' for that Sharon, but from 'Home' onwards, that took years, and a lot of pain. God, that was an excellent arc. Now, what they did to Boomer... (although 'Someone to Watch Over Me' is brilliant, but otherwise from after New Caprica :mad::mad:)

Yes, but their height is an adaptation to gaining food, not defence against predators. That said, their size does offput many predator species - but Saru says there's no complex food webs on his world, just his species and predators who "hunted, bred and farmed" them... which makes even less sense! Why breed a gangly species with almost no meat on it?

I suppose this could be a form of rebellion, if Saru's species developed intelligence after this factory farming - stay thin so you won't make a good meal!

More to the point: If Saru’s species were “hunted, bred and farmed” then how the heck did they get into the federation?!

Isn’t it kinda like if the Vulcans made first contact on earth with some milk cow in Wyoming, and let heifers become federation members, while ignoring humans?!

That's not quite what he said. He did say there was predator, and prey - he didn't specify how many of each. Or the dynamic between them, farming, hunting etc. A lot of people seemed to hear 'bred' but what he actually said was 'biologically determined'. All we know so far it's that he is a prey species with a biologically determined ability to sense the coming of death.

President Jaresh-Inyo in DS9's "Homefront/Paradise Lost" two-parter looked more like you'd think an evolved herbivore might.

Quote from Memory Alpha:

"Your world has food chains. Mine does not. Our species map is binary; we are either predator or prey. My people were hunted, bred, farmed... we are your livestock of old. We were biologically determined for one purpose, and one purpose alone – to sense the coming of death. I sense it coming now."

Saru's explanation reads like goobledygook. But, trying to be charitable, how would that work? Wouldn't that lead to extinction for both sides? Food chains are kinda important.

According to the novel (yes, I know non-canon) he is the only one of his species in Starfleet, he was rescued by a Starfleet crew.

Whether they decide to use that story in the show is up in the air.

Ah, right. I stand corrected. Please disregard the word "back" in my post.

But the process by which Athena gained entrance into the Colonial Fleet is something like what I'd like to see for Burnham assuming the plan is to eventually reinstate her.

And I agree about that arc. It was great.
