Discovery and "The Orville" Comparisons

I tend to agree. If Discovery can continue to make things interesting like they did in "Context is for Kings", then I can see hanging around the whole season. For me. the prologue was a huge mistake.
Had "Context is for Kings" been the first episode, I agree as well. It may have engendered more sympathy for Burnham, as opposed to seeing her be an obnoxious, arrogant officer prone to disobeying orders and making mistakes.

I also don't think TWOK is the greatest ever.

Here, let me respond for you:

Actually, I agree. TUC is my favorite of the original cast movies. TWOK, to me, has not aged well. I love it, but I don't think it deserves the mantle of best Trek movie.

You can tell what kind of STAR TREK fan you are by which movie is your favorite:

1. If your favorite is The Wrath of Khan, you're a mainstream old school Star Trek fan.

2. If your favorite is Generations, you're a TNG fan.

3. If your favorite is The Undiscovered Country, you're a Meyers fan and probably love DS9 or will enjoy Discovery.

4. If your favorite is the original movie, you're excessively in love with Roddenberry's vision *zing*

5. If it's Star Trek (2009) you're my wife and love Zachary Quinto and Chris Pine.

:)

What about TMP fans?

I guess I'm quite different. I'm a mainstream, old school Trek fan that likes TUC and 2009 above the other movies, and so far am not enjoying DSC too much.

6. Loved all 3 new movies, Alice Eve and Rachel Nichols covered in green paint, a bigger Enterprise but not your wife.

They're different flavors of ice cream.

Orville is that OG adventure series with a little bit of character arcing across episodes and it's telling very classic Star Trek stories. (BTW, that music in the Stars episode... was I the only one thinking V'ger as they approached the city ship?)

No, I got that vibe as well. In fact, I was wondering if the twist was going to be a variation of the "Earth space probe gaining sentience" theme from Star Trek.

Discovery may well be a better tv show. But The Orville is easier and arguably more enjoyable to watch.

I think Orville's cheap appeal is it's "easy to watch" Trek while Discovery seems to be setting up "Game of Thrones prestige Trek."

Typo.

Was meant to be chief appeal.

:)

Was this what the fans really wanted though?

I'm less interested in what fans wanted and whether it'll be good.

I'm of the people who think Discovery is awesome in its set up.

Admittedly, I would watch anything if it had Klingons.

If it were done a little better in these early episodes, I would love a GoT version of Trek. There could have been a great setup for the Klingons as well as the Federation. But it wasn't started off the right way.

I felt the Pilot episodes were a misstep designed to appeal to the movie crowd for PEW PEW PEW and the only "episode" of the series we've seen is Episode 3.

And it seems perfectly servicible as a concept.

But, again, I'm here for the Klingons and actually could care less about Michael's existential angst.

Indeed. They basically killed any potentially interesting interplay with the Klingons by killing T'kuvma. I was hoping the antagonism between Kol and T'kuvma was going to be explored. The only other Klingon to get any character was Voq, and I don't think that would be enough to stand on it's own. So that basically kiboshes the entire Klingon perspective of the story right there. They took a step forward and two steps back, and they would have to develop another character in T'kuvma's place to get them back on track for any kind of interesting dynamic.

Yeah, my enjoyment of this show would have been tripled if it had been a closer to even mix of the Klingon and Human Sides.

However, my ideal Star Trek is the I.K.S Gorkon.

:)
