Vanishing crewmen

What's up with the scene with the vanishing crewmen? They are walking along and they just slowly fade out as if phasing into another dimension. Lots of strange things happening on Discovery, I like where it's headed. They have to bring new elements into the show to make it interesting.

Are you serious? It's pretty normal film convention to indicate the passage of time. Are people wondering next about the in-universe explanation for the strange floating text that mysteriously appears every time a Klingon speaks?

No need for people to be rude.

Just denoting the passage of time. I was confused at first as well. Then my wife clued me in.

I wondered what was going on at first as well, but quickly realized they were just using it as a tool to indicate that a lot of time had passed while Burnham was working on the data.

I didn't see it that way at all, especially with all the mysterious things happening on the ship. The Black Alert, strange new way to fly, Burnham saying "there's something strange going on", etc. I don't think it had to do with the passage of time. I'll watch it a third time and see if that could be what's going on.

Sorry, missed the post. I suppose you could delete this thread if you want. No reason to keep being reminded that I'm an idiot. :)
Sorry, didn't want to imply you were. As you can see, others were also confused by what was shown. :)

I was sort of hoping the vanishing crewmen were some new technology. Oh well, maybe there will be other surprises. :techman:

What might have helped make that shot work better, would have been a shift in the lighting ie: natural lighting denoting the passage of the sun, through time.

On a starship, in space, it doesn’t really work as well.

When I saw it, I also thought: Whoa! And then realised it was a time thingee/ effect...

:D

Considering how top secret the Discovery is... I can see that Lorca won't realistically let crew transfer off Discovery, until the experiment, or the war is over, so there will be vanishing crewmen.

1. Crewmen that get sent off the ship, for reasons, are not returned to general matriculation, hell they could even be sent to detention facilities, while they wait out the war or this experiment, or they transferred parallelelly to another edge of the spore experiment.

2. The three prisoners, who were not Michael Burnham. Either they were fake prisoners to shape Burnhams narrative for Lorca, or they are being sent to the worst jobs on that mining colony to die quickly, or they are not going to a mining colony at all, but a dentition facility where they can't say anything about the Discovery or the "final" fate of Michael Burnham, until the experiment or the war is over.

Time lapse. A film technique older than even my own parents :D

Although I won't lie, when the first vanishing happened, I did go "what the hell?!" given I knew there was weird stuff going on with the ship, but quickly realised what was happened haha

It's a time lapse. That's all.
