News Star Trek: Discovery – Adhering To Canon

ENT was all because Trek fans could not laugh at trek, they could not roll with what was a good natures and frankly funny joke poking at treks campy nature

The episodes were because a producer scoured the various series for stuff he could use. Much like Harve Bennett scoured TOS for something he could use when he was hired for what became The Wrath of Khan. I seriously doubt Manny Coto (a TOS fan and ENT showrunner) gave two shits what fans thought.

This is a visual media, looks ARE canon. I could give looks a pass if this was a radio program but its not. Looks are an essential element of this show. That's why we WATCH it.

Sorry, No. Looks are not canon. It was never gonna look like a fan film or a 50 year old and dated TV show. A look so dated just a decade later the series creator total ditched it.

It was produced because fans could not take a joke.

Then what does it look like? What does Star Trek look like if not what I see with my eyes?

Again, what with this whole fan film/50 years old thing? There are absolutely zero people saying that Discovery should have looked like Star Trek Continues or Star Trek. This is a strawman of the real issue. What people ARE saying is that Discovery, not just should have, but, could have looked reasonably consistent with the "50 year old" look and still looked great.

Now on to the canon issue. Just becasue some proclaim that "it was never gonna look[...]" doesn't change the way that Star Trek and its spinoffs actually look. Each series looks the way it does every time I watch my DVDs. No number of later spinoffs are going to change that.

To many it does look constant. People did not even like the kelvin look, now the very ones who hated it are pointing to it being updated. But because so many hated it, that is not what you are gonna get. The only thing that is really a big change is the ENT style uniforms, which can once more, go back to ENT. Once ENT was created the 60's styling was dead.

This era is pretty close in color to the cage era, the only big departure is the Uniform colors. This is startrek, it looks good but it does not look dated and old and never will and honestly that is what people are upset about. We both know you guys will never be happy with any look update unless it is done to your idea, and none of you agree on that.

Kelvin tried it that way, and you guys hated it. So now you are being ignored because you can't cater to a small subset of fans who you can never make happy.

Be careful with @Mirror Mirror he'll start typing shit about what you actually want and that you are lying to yourself!

One thing does not contradict the other. Worf's joke in the DS9 tribble tribute episode was amusing, but it wasn't an explanation.

The important point frequently missed by many here is that it wasn't Worf's joke. Rather, it as a joke by the writers, told to the fans. Worf broke through the fourth wall as fast as they did the time barrier, for fvck's sake!

That's why it was never a question in need of an answer. It was something that didn't really happen "in universe".

If someone doesn't like the explanation or that it exists, it is easy enough to ignore.

Yep and trek fans could not take it. They ran with it in fan canon, they did not grasp it was a joke.

The entire season was fanwank!
Maybe I haven't been around long enough, but I haven't personally heard anyone complain about TOS klingons missing bumps on their foreheads, or vice versa.

Is Enterprise s4 gratuitous? Absolutely, but from all accounts(like the Blu-rays, or an interview I heard with Mike Sussman) they had a blast writing all those stories.

They're(were) the ones in charge of what is in Star Trek, right? I'm just not seeing the connection to "because fans can't take a joke."
