CBS Is Right To Make Us Pay For 'Star Trek: Discovery'

The "free month" didn't seem to work for me. I got the notice, but when I clicked redeem, nothing happened but I was taken back to the main page.
Indeed. They charged me for mine, after I hit "redeem," so you might want to check your statement just in case.

I haven't been charged yet. I was going to renew anyhow, but after Dennis posted that, I said, "WTF, I'll try it."

I'm just irked they offered a free month and then didn't give it. Unless it takes a while for the info to hit the account. I'll check everything tomorrow.

That is a matter of taste.

Yes it is.

What you think is Waffle House I think is Iron Chef. Not my problem. I'm the one enjoying the steak and paying the money I've deemed is a reasonable expense for said steak.

So pay it

Fortunately for you, nobody's making you pay for anything you don't like.
No need to get defensive.I'm just putting your little analogy into the proper context. I'll give it some more time and if it doesn't improve I'll have no problem canceling. In the meantime, this is a message board and we have just as much right to point out the show's flaws as you do to gush over it

I wasn't defensive, nor was I even remotely infringing upon your rights (!?). Relax, ace.

If having your opinion challenged and responded to is going to be translated into "booo you are trying to silence me" I think you're going to have a disappointing and offensive experience here.

Nothing more frustrating than someone who gets all hurt and cries "persecution!!!" when they are responded to in a challenging manner.

Why don't you just call the customer support line and get it ironed out?

I used to do my fair share of complaining about CBS-AA but I changed my mind. It's worth the money, IMHO.

I think it was the live TV that did it. Maybe I won't watch any of the other CBS shows, but the ability to see live TV is a kicker. And I don't have to fuck around with an antenna or anything like that.

I mean, I'll still buy DSC on iTunes when (yes, WHEN) it comes out, but CBS-AA is good enough in the meantime.

The hypocrisy and irony in saying "I refuse to pay for Star Trek" is staggering to me.

I guarantee that most of the people who are complaining about having to pay to watch DSC own at least one of the Star Trek films, TV series, comics, and/or books and had no problem whatsoever paying for those things, and yet they're whining and whinging about having to sign up for CBS All Access in order to watch DSC.

If you truly "refuse to pay for Star Trek", get rid of anything Trek-related that you have paid money for at any point in your life, and do not pay for anything that is Trek-related again for the rest of your life.

I cancelled and got the offer for a one month extension to the one-week free trial, which of course I accepted. When it didn't show up on the account, I called Customer Service. They confirmed the redemption and told me it might not show up on the account, but the extension is valid and I won't be charged. I'd expect the same for you and anyone else who redeemed the extension.

The (US) Customer Service number is 888-274-5343. They'll need the email address for your account if you call to confirm.

So anyone who objects to paying to watch commercials on a service where we find just one worthwhile show in the entire library should throw out all their Star Trek possessions? That's dumb.

The basic objection is a fee to watch commercials.

I refuse to pay for a subscription service with commercials on CBS All Access for Star Trek Discovery, or a subscription service that charges extra above the existing premium for no commercials. I'm okay with commercials for free service in which a third party is paying the salaries of everyone involved in the production based upon our purchases of those products - just like broadcast TV.

I would, and WILL, pay for Star Trek Discovery on DVD/BD, which I think everyone, or mostly everyone, would also agree, in addition to the other things for which you stipulate we are indeed willing to pay, self-refuting your complaint of hypocrisy.

I am really against having to pay a separate CBS streaming service fee in order to watch Star Trek Discovery. In my opinion CBS is very arrogant to think they have sufficient programming to warrant a separate fee. What really irks me is that you can watch Star Trek Discovery on netflix in other countries, just not the US. So CBS is fine with not charging the rest of the world a separate charge but if your in America they are going to bleed you dry. Lame!!

Outside of going to see the Kelvin-verse movies in theaters, it's been a long time since I've paid for anything Star Trek.*

(*I am paying for Netflix, but Star Trek is only part of the reason I have it. I don't know if that counts.)

Well the DVD season sets were pretty steeply priced (so they did have a problem with it but not an insurmountable one), I expect a sizable part of the fans bought some used years later when they were much cheaper. But there's a big difference between buying something after you initially watched it and liked it, liked it enough that you'd want to watch it several more times, and paying to watch something for the first time with little idea of how good and enjoyable it'll be.

Watching movies in theaters is a blind-buy experience but one that's declining as more people seem to feel it increasingly isn't necessarily worthwhile.

I wouldn't say they are definitively right or wrong, but I do think it's a worthwhile experiment, and I applaud the venture. But I think one of the biggest openings they gave themselves for criticism is calling it CBS ALL ACCESS. CBS is something people are accustomed to getting for free, and now it's a paid service.

If they had instead called it something like COBO (a nonsense word like Hulu, Vudu, etc), I think there would have helped consumers to separate it from the CBS entity.

It wouldn't have killed the criticism entirely, but I think there is something to be said for the bad optics a free service suddenly going paid.

Will they "post" each episode of the season on a weekly basis? Or is there a plan to do some kind of mid-season break? If I'm going to pay for this, it's going to be just for Discovery. I don't want to be held hostage because they suddenly wait a month to air the second half of the season.

There's a break from mid-November until January, I believe.

Nobody is being held hostage for anything.

Fees and schedules are clearly indicated ahead of time. You can pay for when you want to watch and cancel when you don't. You can even wait until the end of the season, sign up for a free week trial and watch the whole season during that week and never spend a dime.

I did that years ago with Hulu, but I forget what show it was for...

Thanks. I'll give them a jingle tomorrow. I did email them a short while ago.
