News Seth MacFarlane’s The Orville

Is it wrong that I want to see in an episode of Discovery at some point that the United Federation of Planets was inspired by the Planetary Union in an early 21st Century television series? Everything would come full circle. I'd laugh.
We can't have such frivolity in our science fiction. You do not realize that Grimdark Sci-Fi was the only subgenre to survive the franchise wars. Now all sci-fi series are Grimdark. Seth MacFarlane just didn't get the memo.

Okay, I finished watching all of the, as of now, aired episodes on the DVR and... I think I like it. largely.

Some of the broader humor and present-day references/comedic beats are still out of place to me and sort of "tarnish" the vibe the show seems to *want* to give, but in the end it feels pretty fun and overall like TNG-era Trek. It's just nice to see a bright, optimistic, non dreary and gloomy future. (*ahem* Discovery *ahem*)

The third episode centered around the baby I thought was really done and very reminiscent of several TNG episodes. The navigator guy(s) still don't work for me entirely the humor for them is probably most out of place.

I did really like the second episode with the security chief girl in charge and The Cap and XO at the alien zoo some nice character stuff and I liked the joke of ordering the pot brownie from the replicator. (Though Chekov's Pot Brownie ended up not doing anything. I was expecting it to play some role, like the seeds in the first episode, but it was referenced and then mostly forgotten.)

Wow, no chatter about tonight's episode yet? I'm surprised because it is easily the best one yet. For the 1st time, I honestly don't have any negative criticism on this one. It's just smart, fun, well played, great cameos, & interesting. This was good tonight, without fail. They are hitting a stride here, & if this keeps up, the thing works, & I'm now glad to be watching. It is the kind of Star Trek we aren't getting from Star Trek anymore. How effed up is that?

Last week in Rick and Morty, Rick figured out the plot in seconds, but for the rest of the show, may be 5 times, b-players keep trying to explain themselves to Rick because they think that he hasn't figured out their #### yet.

I've seen the Starlost.

I think the point was to set up their later conversation about pot use. So while the pot brownie wasn't used directly, it opened the door for the topic at large.
