News Seth MacFarlane’s The Orville

I am curious, what is Yaphit's job on the ship? My guess is he's the guy they send into the Jeffries Tubes when needed.
Good question, and honestly, I hope we never know, for sure, during the series run. I don't know why, I just think it would be hilarious if it ends up Yaphit has the most important job on the ship and we never really know until the finale, when he saves everyone from certain destruction.

I dunno, for some reason I think "Brutus," which aside from being the name of a Roman senator was one of the names of the big guy with the deep voice who was Popeye's nemesis.

Kind of like Worf = Wolf.

Errr. wouldn't that be a Lineweaver tube or somesuch?
Actually, true story, on Stargate when the humans began building their own starships, they still used the term Jeffries Tubes. The producers explained it "even in universe, the people designing and building these ships are likely Star Trek fans and would use this term anyway." Because of that, I just automatically use the term "Jeffries Tubes" regardless the franchise.

Maybe they could lampshade it at some point, with Gordon asking "what the hell do you even do on this ship anyway?" and Yaphit responding "I've been wondering the same thing about you!"

There's been plenty of times I've watched a movie with a character in an air vent and said they're "in the Jefferies Tube."

That was Bluto in Popeye but otherwise I think it is a valid reference. At least the Senator part.

We could all go in there and report the group for harassing us, y'know, with the presence of those 2 guys (moderator is also an Axanar guy).
Nah, I wouldn't do that because it would be unethical since they're not harassing anyone yet.

If the Union continues to insist that the Moclans adhere to their cultural beliefs then all the Moclans have to do is drop out of the Union.

Sure. Countries can leave the United Nations or the European Union as well. So what?

BTW, Mercer didn't track Bortus back to his homeworld and insist that the Moclans behave themselves.

What happened was that Mercer asserted Union law aboard a Union starship.

Bortus, as an individual, requested that Mercer represent him at a tribunal that he chose to call for.

The issue before the tribunal was not the abolition of Moclan tradition. It was a question of which parent the law would side with in a family dispute.

That's all.

Is it wrong that I want to see in an episode of Discovery at some point that the United Federation of Planets was inspired by the Planetary Union in an early 21st Century television series? Everything would come full circle. I'd laugh.
