Sooooo....TV-MA, then?

Logopolis

Which the exception of a few minor splatters and brief nudity (the ladder of which was no more 'graphic' than the nudity we saw on Enterprise), I still fail to see how the content of this show will hit MA standards as far as its adult content is concerned. While it's early days, they didn't seem to throw us into the deep end content wise.

Does anyone still believe it will become that program?

When we saw Burnham in the decontamination thing, I was wondering if they'd slip in some nudity, but instead she was in some kind of bubble wrap bikini.

That they didn't suggests this is the standard for the series and there's not much to worry about.

One of the EPs said the show will be family friendly, so whatever they got the MA rating for must be minor.

The MA rating is very likely related to the "dropping the F-bomb" for which there is an entire thread.

In Canada, we have a similar rating system for TV but it is applied on a per episode basis. Part I was PG and Part II was 14+. I don't know if the American version varies by episode.

I can't recall it being so... I believe that if a tv series does something in a particular episode that crosses into more mature ratings territory, they are either shot down and told to re-write it, or the entire show gets re-rated.

The first episode was assigned a TV-14 by CBS, and this makes sense because it was on over-the-air broadcast, and it's very rare to show TV-MA content OTA.

As for what type of content is coming up, it's already been revealed that there will be a smattering of F-bombs in season one. I think that's what pushed this show beyond the TV-14 level.

Yes, it is per episode. ENT was mostly TV-PG but there were a couple episodes that got TV-14. I remember thinking how gratuitously edgy that was at the time.

"Fear the Walking Dead" started with a few TV-14 episodes and then went into full-on TV-MA mode.

"Mad Men" was mostly TV-14 with some TV-PG episodes in the mix.

Both episodes got TV-14.

Not only that, there's not even one single board that handles ratings. It's done by the networks. So, you may see a show rated TV-G on one network and TV-PG on another.

Having networks assign ratings to their own product could be seen as some kind of conflict of interest, or something. But it would be an insane amount of work for one independent ratings board to have to review and rate every single thing that gets shown on TV.
