Maybe, but I would argue that success of both hinges on what we can and do see, not what we can't (due to conflicts with known information.
If the super-nova were in Romulan space (which I assume it was) , wouldn't the star bear a more Romulan/Vulcan sounding name than "Hobus?"
I am sure there are some great original ideas for story arcs out there that have been circulating. What are the best ones you've heard? They can be original ideas or maybe ideas adapted from other scifi stories. I think Enteprise had trouble thinking of new compelling villains.. the Xindi/Dominion etc were awful. The last good villain in ST was the Borg. Very original at the time, especially on the small screen. There may have been villains like it in short stories and novels (brutal hive mind), but it hadn't been seen on TV or movies

meant to say that the Dominion in DS9 were not as compelling as Borg. very meh as far as villains go. i do have to say that I found the Species 8472 to be interesting as a villain, however poorly the CGI has aged and some of the tacky plot lines in Voyager were

The Borg were great but in my opinion very poorly used in Voyager. In my opinion, one of the problems with Star Trek villains are the producers and writers obsession with personalizing them and making it where the crew interact with them on a one on one level. I think a future Trek villain should be like the Andromedans in Star Fleet Battles. The Andromedans are a very powerful race with very tough hard to beat ships, like the Borg in that respect. But Andromedans themselves have never actually been seen. They board other ships using robots but apparently are not robots themselves. They never communicate over a viewscreen and I think their communications with other races are what amounts to text only messages.
Well, to me, DSC could be a good series post-Nemesis era (yeah, taking out Sarek of the frame) ... This is I want for new epic stories: Star Trek has a great story based universe, great villains, great background to continue for the seeking of new life and new civilizations... so, lets go blodly (in the future post Nemesis era), where no saga has gone before.
Yes, that would be interesting. It reminds of me character skills in games like Mass Effect. And then for a final feature finish it off with a Götterdämmerung where major conflagration causes the Federation to break up and then disintegrate. It might even mirror our future.
I'm in favor of some sort of Federation break-up, as alway it would depend on how well it's plotted out and written. Don't want a dystopia, but also don't want a complete and utter utopia either.
A Federation broken up into smaller factions, with different ideals, and different goals might be interesting. One faction that doesn't care about a Prime Directive, for instance, and one that says screw it, lets make cloaking devices, and another alliance that doesn't care about genetic augmentation and experimentation.... it could make things rather interesting.... *especially* if the main ship was one out of time / trapped in stasis, and still held the original Federation ideals.
