Discovery may be a divisive series, but it's prompting some good discussion.

The Constitution Class starships should be very commonplace in the Federation at this point. They've been around since 2245 in the Prime Timeline.

In a war situation, these ships should definitely be on a frontline, given their tactical superiority and advanced tech, compared to older classes.

This is what a Constitution Class Starship looked like on TOS (CG Remastered);

This may look quite awkward on STD.

Given that STD is going for a JJ-inspired visual reboot, should the Constitution Class ships be redesigned to fit with this series? Should they go with the JJ film design?

What do you want them to look like?

If this is the actual Klingon war, it would be hard to justify leaving them out of the battle. Especially in a war where "8000 died during the first two days" according to the promo for 1x03 of STD.

This point in time seemed to be the height of the Constitution Class' popularity.

By TOS, basically every other starship was a Constitution Class that had been in service prior for some time.

I don't see an issue with the exteriors of constitutions looking out of place. Maybe a few tweaks texturally required, but nothing major.

The interiors ? Chalk and cheese. I can't imagine that being reconciled easily.

No exterior redesign. We already have five spinoff shows and a couple of movies to demonstrate that it has never been necessary to redesign in order to make Kirk's ship acceptable to new audiences. There just doesn't exist an audience segment that would both bail out at the sight, and matter.

Interior redesign? They did none in ENT. But they did interior extrapolation. More of that would be fine. And of course the uniforms would be as befits the mid-2250s, with perhaps a glimpse or two at the "older" stuff but with the DSC style on the foreground. Lit in the modern fashion, those good old cardboard sets could keep on serving, I guess.

All that said, I don't think Kirk's ship (Pike's at this point) should be considered particularly significant. In "Errand of Mercy", she stayed at the sidelines in a big war with the Klingons. Quite possibly she and her dozen or so sisters would do the same this time around, too. Perhaps exploration ships are piss-poor at fighting, which is why the TOS villains prefer to target Kirk rather than Lorca?

How about refit Constitution class ships? The Enterprise can't be the first and only one to get the upgrade treatment, and its a perfectly acceptable timeless design, passable for advanced by today's standards.

It would make a brief appearance of a sixties style Enterprise all the more remarkable, and give it a plausible in-universe explanation.

I'll admit it, I love the little call backs to previous series, and I prefer it when they embrace the style differences and run with it. Used sparingly though, retain the novelty value.

I don't want it to be redesigned. Sure, add surface detail, but leave the basic shape as it is. TOS shape with TMP level hull details is fine. Interiors are not such a big deal, though I'd prefer if they had at least some resemblance to the original.

It really depends on how they redesign it.

The Constitution-refit looked fantastic (it was after all essentially a redesign so the ship looked good on screen). Meanwhile both the JJ-Trek redesigns look awful.

Another example of a good one:-

So yeah, I'm for a redesign, as long as it looks good.
