Star Trek Discovery to drop F-bomb (at least twice)

Well it wasn't in Enterprise. And it wasn't in TOS. If DSC which is in the middle has it then there should be something basic, maybe in the premise itself or the plot, that should make it easier for Trekfans to swallow the profane. Like there's a reason why people in the 23rd century suddenly started to swear, but it died out by the time Kirk and Spock came along.

Or that's probably asking for too much. It's just a couple swear words.

I'm not fazed by colourful metaphors generally -- not even with kids -- but with Trek I'd leave it out if it was up to me.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to Monday.

I'll have to see it to judge. Context is everything in life (I like the smell of fresh asphalt, but I'd be very unhappy to encounter it in a sushi bar).

I, personally, have no problem with the F-bomb. I use it daily. I do however, have issue with it in Star Trek. I got into Star Trek when I was 8 years old. Paramount and CBS both seem to be oblivious with the importance of bringing in young viewers who grow up as fans. Parents probably won't want to watch "mature" Trek with their children.

If they do this, it will be the first Star Trek series I can't watch with my dad because he's an ultra religious conservative and would never watch a show that has language above "damn" or "hell". Kinda upset I'm going to have to forefeit this family show with the man who got me into Trek. :(

When my daughter was young she never used profanity. Well she's all grown up now and uses it liberally on her Twitter feed which I do follow. The profanity bothers me, but it bothers me more not following her, because it's easier for me to keep track of her. So I put up with the cursing.

Bottom line, time passes, things change, you can either get on board or GTFO (to coin a phrase my little girl uses way too much :))

"We no longer succumb to self-censorship in long-running family TV shows. We seek to lower ourselves. We've evolved beyond the need for propriety in language."

The real test will be if they can say nigger, faggot, or cunt. That's how we know we're watching prestige TV.

It's pretty obvious that none of these are going to feature on Discovery, so the only purpose this post serves is to appear edgy. And since racist, homophobic and sexist slurs aren't allowed on this site, you're receiving an infraction for this. Comments to PM.

You know... I tried, I really tried to like Discovery, but between the implied graphic violence and now that we know for sure that the f word will be used (which is completely verboten in my household), it's clear that this show is not for me nor my family. Oh well, c'est la vie. I hope everyone else enjoys.

I personally don't care but it's kind of unnecessary. Like it's trying too hard and that is bit pathetic.

The F-bomb has been around forever and in usage forever. Other Star Treks in the TV franchise didn't feel the need to use it because they had standards.

Nah. They just weren't allowed. There's a difference. Star Trek used to be about pushing back against those rules. Even fighting for the right to do so.

Again, Star Trek was about challenging those standards and breaking them. I feel sorry for people who grew up with "safe" Star Trek.
That's where we differ then. I enjoyed growing up with and being introduced to the Star Trek that I saw. I'll be watching Discovery though, for sure, but if it's considered edgy to say a naughty word then.. er.. pathetic. Pushing back boundaries and saying a 'bad' word.. same thing? Not in my book.

In your book it's a naughty word. In reality it's just a word, a word that can be used in many ways.In differing contexts It's taking the edge off, not being edgy.
