David Mack is GUSHING about it...this should settle it

I don't appreciate you calling my friend a liar. As I already said, he praised the show's writing to me in exactly the same terms in a private conversation several months ago. Since I was a fellow writer expressing curiosity about the chances of doing my own tie-in novel, he presumably would've tipped me off if I had anything to worry about. And he's certainly not the type to stay quiet if he has a complaint about something.
I would trust Mack as a better indicator of Trek quality than most media critics.

Just a friendly reminder to all that David is a board member and as such the usual rules apply with regard to trolling, flaming, and personal information. :)
Carry on...
Wait...so I can say Harlan Ellison is a pompous ass, but I couldn't say that if he were a member of this broad?

Lying? No. Being too close to the work? Probably.
Several posts have openly stated that he has to say positive things due to the position he's in. Many of the replies seem to think he's a staff writer on the show, or something. I'm not alone in noticing the accusations; Christopher L. Bennett has also noticed and reacted appropriately.

I'm sorry. I find no credibility in someone that is working on the project being super excited about it. I bet if you asked Seth MacFarlane, he is super excited and thinks highly about The Orville.

It's just natural to be stoked about something you're involved in beyond a reasonable degree.

He's not "working on the project". He's the guy writing the first tie-in novel. Again, he has NO REASON to be overly hyped about it unless he actually feels that way. I don't recall JM Dillard or LA Graf or Diane Carey talk about how awesome the new show is that they're writing the novelization of the pilot for.

Tell that to David Gerrold. He was excited about STNG then abruptly left. What did he do? He kept his mouth shut for years. Someone who disliked a show wouldn't say anything, whereas someone who does would be excited...and not only that, but as pointed out Mack doesn't actually have to rely on DSC for anything, his career is fine.

Same goes with Les Moonves who loves the first 6 episodes. He would never have said that he'd have simply said nothing, lest the show was terrible when it aired and stockholders and media would think he's an idiot when that was demonstrated.

I'm hearing that CBS is super confident about the show myself.

RAMA

The issue isn't David Mack's integrity. As far as I'm concerned, it's secure.

The issue is the misguided notion that any one person's belief in how well the show is being conceived and executed, whoever that person is, would by itself settle debate or determine how we, members of the audience, will receive it.
Oh I agree, it "settles" nothing, but I find it amusing how the usual suspects are wanting the show to fail. :) Especially when everything has been so positive so far.

That's the flaw in the logic of "well of course they'd praise it, they're the ones depending on its success." If they weren't sure about the product, the last person who would praise the show would be Moonves. He's never been one to praise a show just because it's on his network. After all, he's got nothing riding on the show's success beyond having to find a different show to hinge the success of All Access on, and I'm sure he had a number of contingencies should DSC not work out. I seriously doubt he was thinking "Only a new Star Trek show could possibly serve as my lynchpin for AA's success."

I think CBS is very confident, and wants the audience to see it to make their own determination. I don't blame them for being tight lipped, even if it is unusual.

It's also worth knowing a few months ago, around the time Desperate Hours and his Titan novel coming out later this year were announced, he said he had no more Trek books contracted and at time didn't have plans for any. So that gives him even less reason to lie, since he's not even working for CBS at the moment. And for anyone who's worried, he posted all of this on the boards himself over in the Literature section, so this is already public knowledge.

I definitely trust him, and the fact he is so positive does make me a bit more confident. Like others have said, if he didn't like it he like it he probably wouldn't have said anything. Now I know that doesn't mean I'm going to love it as much as he does, but I feel pretty good about.

David Mack is very hit or miss when it comes to good story idea's so I can't really use his opinion as a barometer for quality.

I think a lot of the reason Mack's opinion holds so much weight with me is that honestly, the core writing staff for Trek at Pocket not only know their stuff but seem to have a real passion for Trek. There have been some bad Trek novelists in the past. They haven't written in years and I don't how many of them left on their own or were simply never asked to write more. But there's a reason the current group has been around as long as it has and isn't going anywhere any time soon.
