CBS has an embargo on reviews - studios usually do this when they expect a movie or show to be trashed.

In this case - they know how vocal fans can be and just want to have revieewers hold off publishing any review until the air date.

That ISN'T uncommon (a publishing embargo). IF they didn't allow critics to see the pilot episode (and again, from the article they did screen the episode to critics - they're just embargoing publishing reviews until after the first episode airs) - then you'd be right, and that there could be something the studio is concerned about. (And lets be honest studios are ALWAYS concerned with expensive productions of high value IPs.)
In this case though - I think it's more of an overall marketing strategy for the TV premiere than any real concern that the product overall is shoddy. But we'll see in 10 days.

Embargoes are normal. Not letting critics see it is the sign of bring worried.

Yes, embargos are "normal". But usually they get lifted a week before the airdate, to generate buzz right before people can watch it. Withholding reviews until the airdate is... unusual. To say the least. And usually only happens when the creators aren't content with a work. Aka they know finished the product, saw the product, and knew people, regular people, won't know what to do with it.
Don't get fooled: This is not to avoid fan-backlash. This is to avoid regular opinions. That means problems with the basics, aka "characters", or "plot". This is so people aren't able to see the horrible Rotten Tomatoes-score before it airs.

Look at the marketing for discovery. Very little in the way of plot information has been released in any of them. This appears intentional and not allowing reviews is probably part of the secrecy and they want to keep the plot secret until it airs.
If they were really worried they would not be doing screenings for the critics but they are doing those. Don't let critics see it and it is a bad bad sign. Not wanting spoilers to leak until it airs is not a huge red flag.

There are often embargoes of material collected at press junkets or reviews until X-number-of-days before premiere. It's customary for such embargoes to be released days or a week or so before the premiere.
Absolutely. Reviews may or may not matter in the end - where Trek is concerned, they're certainly not going to depress the premiere - but what they do mean is that the studio expects reviewers to say bad things about the show and they want to minimize that.

Well, if they're lucky things will work out as well for them as they have for The Orville.
What happened? Reviewers trashed it and it was still one of the most watched premieres of the last couple years.
Holding reviews until after the premiere makes me uneasy about the product.
Many shows have done embargos even if they don't expect negative reviews. Recent example is the return of twin peaks had a review embargo until the premier.
It is honestly quite shocking that they have done so good a job to keep spoilers from leaking on disovery at all. I don't see them wanting to risk changing that now.

Entertainment Weekly has an article up on this as well. CBS being controlling and worry about leaks could very well be the reason.

In a culture where it's the thing now to know every plot detail before even seeing it, maybe they just don't want that?
Since this cost a lot of money and they want people to...watch it and not have half of it memorised as fans would days before it airs.
Remember when that happened? a surprise twist meant watching it *during* the movie or episode. Man the 90's seems so long ago.
