Do you think Picard would have been as popular if they had given him a wig?

I'm fairly certain I saw an interview with Sir Patrick somewhere when he was asked about why Picard was bald, to which his reply was essentially: by the 24th century people wouldn't care about baldness.

It doesn't seem to bother Deltans.

It would probably be within the power of 24th century medicine to reverse baldness quickly, completely, and permanently.

But would 24th century people consider pattern baldness to be a defect that needs to be cured, or just as another beautiful aspect of human diversity?

Probably both, there will always be a market for cosmetic changes from simple store make up to surgery and there will always be people who don't give a damn about such things.

Follicle stimulation was common enough that Voyager had the equipment to carry it out (when they de-Borgified Seven).

Thanks, but which is the rug that he said he used in auditions? :)
I'm not sure, but if I had to guess from the time period that he auditioned for TNG, & maybe from the fact that the pic you posted, (which seems like it's from around the same time) looks like a posed portrait, instead of a screen capture from a production (Like all the pics I've posted) I'd say #6 might be one he owns for auditions (& looks like the one from your picture) but I don't think there's any way of really knowing. The rest do all look production specific though

It's fair to note that my collage isn't chronological
#4 - Fall of Eagles (1974)
#1 - North & South (1975)
#2 & #3 are both from Hedda (1975) Which I didn't know until just now lol
#6 - I, Claudius (1976)
#5 - Hamlet, Prince of Denmark (1980)
#7 - TNG's Violations
#8 - TNG's Hollow Pursuits
#9 thru #12 are all post-TNG

As is this new one I just found. Not sure where it's from. Looks like a stage production

I think this is his own hair, what there is of it.

This would appear to be his real hairline too, not much later

I do kind of like how he gets referred to as "Smooth headed" instead of bald, in Gambit, as a pretty objective descriptor, like such things are pretty standard Human stuff to the vast galaxy of different creatures, also denoting its lack of forehead bumpiness lol

I read somewhere, I think, that he once auditioned for Olivier with and without a rug. Olivier was like, "Ok, now put it on. Now take it off. Now put it on again."

The weird thing is that he'd gotten some minor acclaim in the 5 years or so prior to TNG, with his appearances in Excalibur, Lifeforce, Dune, & on British tv. It appeared that throughout the 80's in those performances he'd gotten away from wearing hair pieces.

Most of the stuff in my posts are from the 70s when he was younger & it was probably more awkward for him. So the notion that anyone would want him in a rug at that (TNG) point in his career seems pretty dumb, especially since he looks just as good without it & by far more natural. If there was some bit of indecision about it at any point, I imagine that once they saw the hair piece, they all realized how dumb using it would be

Ladies & Gentlemen, & children of all ages, I give you now & for all time, the comprehensive Sir Patrick Stewart Rugtrospective. The one posted above by Skipper is from his Claudius period (#6)

There is of course also this one, but I thought it deserved to be set apart lol

What was #7 from? TNG early costume designs?

There was a DC comic that flashed back to the Stargazer days, and it had Picard look like that.

It's a behind the scenes photo from Violations (Like Tosk said) It's from Bev's nightmare sequence in that episode, & it takes place just after Jack Crusher's death, which would've been during Stargazer times

I think they all look like real hair.
I think if it fools people it's okay.

Somehow, after reading the topic title, I pictured Picard-with-a-wig masquerading as his brother, in a dead-parrot-like scene ....
