Aboard the Starship Shenzhou, Lieutenant Michael Burnham, a human woman raised and educated among Vulcans, is promoted to acting first officer. But if she wants to keep the job, she must prove to Captain Philippa Georgiou that she deserves to have it.

She gets her chance when the Shenzhou must protect a Federation colony that is under attack by an ancient alien vessel that has surfaced from the deepest fathoms of the planet’s dark, uncharted sea.

As the menace from this mysterious vessel grows stronger, Starfleet declares the colony expendable in the name of halting the threat. To save thousands of innocent lives, Burnham must infiltrate the alien ship. But to do so she needs to face the truth of her troubled past, and seek the aid of a man she has tried to avoid her entire life—until now.

Not sure if Pocket/Gallery will be more strict with book stores adhering to the street date with this one to not have it be out before the pilot airs, but since David Mack got his author copies I figured it is time for the review thread.

Please note that David has said that the novel has (minor) spoilers for the pilot episode, so even if you get it before the pilot drops, you might want to wait an extra couple of days before reading it.

I saw on Amazon.com has Desperate Hours and DS9 Original Sin are being released the same day.

Yep, but since I haven't seen any mention of Original Sin being spotted in the wild, either by readers or the author, I figured I would spread out the postings of the review threads a bit and post the Original Sin one tomorrow.

I'm really looking forward to this one. I'm especially curious since we know there was quite a bit of back and forth between David and Kirsten Beyer.

Let's just hope that the new series isn't unworthy.

(And now someone come up with a pun involving children of the storm :p)

Well, maybe this one will bring about some atonement for the problems people had with Voyager and Enterprise. Although there's always the chance that everything we've been hearing about the show is a pocket full of lies.

Maybe the so called Infinity Architect Jim Starlin will at one point write an episode. Nevertheless many people will demand acts of contrition for the series not looking like "The Cage".

So this will be the first time a Trek spinoff's premiere book release is not a novelization, huh? That's cool. And pressure is on, I expect this to be the best "first novel" of the lot. If it's not, I'll be outraged and stuff.

So tempting to vote 'outstanding' right now - after all it's David Mack, how could it be anything but?

I preordered this-- the first Star Trek novel I've done so for over ten years, I think! (I guess what I'm saying is that both this book and the show had better be good.)

I'm waiting with this one untill I've seen atleast the first episode of Discovery, and see what I feel about the characters. If I want to invest into getting to know their background.

The bad thing about starting a review thread weeks before a book comes out is having to wade through the multiple pages of non-review posts before the actual reviews show up.

You say that on the 18th post of the thread and still on the first page, also contributing to the non-issue you are complaining about.

Yes, but the thread was started on September 9th, with a poll no less, about a book that was over 2 weeks away from being released. I guess my question would be why not wait until the book is actually released before starting a poll and spoiler thread about it?
