News The Orville: For Star Trek Fans

How come everything has to be either/or these days. DC or Marvel, Trek or Wars, Discovery or Orville, stuff like that. It's actually a little annoying.

Because not everyone is obliged to like everything? Even then, its more complex then that. Like DC vs Marvel. Comics wise I love them both, but the movies are a completely different thing. Sometimes one thing is much better then another (although what's better is obviously hugely subjective). Nothing wrong with liking one thing but not another similar thing. To be fair, I think Orville will be pretty terrible, I'm just slightly less irritated by Orville then the alternative which is why I took a jab at the other show.

So, I guess in this case its barely even one vs the other, since I think they'll both suck, just one slightly less so. Plus, I think Macfarlane is actually a fan of Star Trek, which means even if his show sucks he's at least coming from a better place then the people making the show which must not be named (which I'm only not naming because of a whim and everyone knows what I'm talking about anyway).

One show certainly is actively courting and not being condescending or take for granted Star Trek fans and it isn't the show with Star Trek in the title.

Sorry, but one actor making a humorous comment or two does not make the entire production condescending towards fans. Fans need to lighten up.

The amount of care they show to the franchise with how much they want to change it because they think it isn't edgy enough is enough to show me their condescension to Trek fans The feelings of Isaacs are not isolated and something circulating on set. We'll change anything we want because you fools will just watch anyway.

How about, "We'll change something because this is a buisiness."

There is nothing to indicate that Issacs' attitude is common on set. I see that attitude as an assumption not supported by facts.

Secondly, the Orville is a loving recreation to a series in the past. Which, is fine, but that doesn't make Discovery bad-just different.

Edgy? What makes you think their goal is to be edgy? At best they are trying to make it modern. A Star Trek for today. Star Trek has always had an element of change to it. When it stopped embracing change is when it began to fail. In TMP they changed the ship, the costumes and the Klingons. TWOK changed things again. TNG and DS9 shook things up in their own ways. Change is good.
So, you've been on the set. Talked to people there? Eavesdropped on a conversation or two?

Issac's is right. There are fans who will watch no matter how much they complain. They will watch so they can complain. Not just Trek, but across all forms of entertainment. That's sad and funny in far too many ways.

So not pitting things against each other is the same as liking everything? Your right it is complex but more often than not I see one thing being bashed for another thing. In the 90s it was Trek vs Wars. Now it's Marvel vs DC. Guess what, I don't like everything Marvel is putting out (in fact I'm having a hard time getting through Defenders at the moment) but at the same time consider Wonder Woman the best comic book movie in the last 5 years. That's not pitting franchises against each other. That's judging individual things on their own entertainment value.

In terms of Orville or Discovery, honestly both McFarlane and Issacs were condesending but they were both trying to sell their respective shows. I'm looking forward to Discovery simply because I'm a Star Trek fan and this is the first series on tv in more than a decade. I probably will see the first episode of Orville because it looked funny. There's room in this world for both.

Given my lack of desire to subscribe to an Internet streaming service, coupled with the crappy broadband infrastructure round my way, I'm counting on a UK TV broadcaster picking up Orville. On the bright side, I can wait till the jury's in on Discovery before deciding on getting it on Blu-ray. I may not have to spend any money on it at all if it sinks.
