Jodie Whittaker is the 13th Doctor

If it did, then that one slipped my notice. However, I do recall the first TARDIS scene in "The Pyramids of Mars". The Doctor stands by the console lost in thought. Sarah strolls into the room wearing a white "period" dress. Distracted, the Doctor addresses Sarah Jane as Victoria. She wears it the rest of the story.

That's the one, outside of whatever story Victoria wore it (Evil Of The Daleks?)

I wouldn't mind her just glancing downwards at her chest and say something like "I'm going to need to get some brawls" or maybe have her wear a old outfit of a previous companion out in the public as she leaves to go get some female clothing. It doesn't make sense that the Doctor would have tons of woman clothing around if this is the first time he/she has been female.

1. What the hell is a brawl? Or do you mean a bra?

2. Maybe they should have the Doctor look down at her vagina and say: Oy, better get some tampons!

Ridiculous.
How uncomfortable with women's bodies are fans?

I think most fans are open to the idea of a woman Doctor. That doesn't mean you can't toss in a few puns from time to time. Kind of like the last guy getting some old guy jokes or Scottish jokes. Matt Smith had the long hair joke and I think even a chin joke. Tennant was checking out his new teeth. I recall some jokes about his hair as well. If the character's entire credibility relies on it's ability to substain puns and a occasional joke then that makes me wonder if the audience really isn't ready for a woman Doctor.

I mean I think I can think of thousands of ways to poke fun at the new situation, just as long as it doesn't became the whole thrust of a episode. If this were pre-internet you could open a episode with a white eccentric British guy and a young beatiful woman inspecting a old buidling or something. KInd of set up the idea that this will be the new Doctor and companion but then a monster shows up and it looks like they are about to be killed only out of nowhere Whittaker and maybe even the new companion show up and save their lives and says something like "I guess you didn't see that coming!" Hard to do nowdays since we all been spoiled as to who the new Doctor is. PLus lots depends on how the regeneration plays out or even the plot of the Christmas special.

That's right, because BOOB jokes are the same thing as an accent. Nothing sexist about BOOB jokes. Like I said, let's have the Doctor look at her vagina and scream, "WHERE'S MY COCK, OH, SHIT, WHERE IS MY COCK?!?"

But, why does it need to be poked fun at? Why is her BODY the point of the joke? Especially when it's already going to be an uphill climb of credibility for some people to accept Whitaker? Why go for the lowest form of humor?

And if your thousand ways are boob jokes, pass.

Because your joke uses cussing, swear words and a graphic word for penis not to mention a sexual body part such as a vagina. Mine uses a piece of clothing. Your joke implies the doctor is horrified that he is no longer in the body of a man. My joke simply acknowledges a change has happened.

As for why to have the joke. The question is why not? Show the audience your capable of making fun of yourself. Acknowledge a big moment has happened in the franchise without it turning into a sermon or lecture. You seem to think the moment should play like John Crighton being in Aeryon's body from "Farscape" in that body switching episode. That kind of attitude would not fit into type of character the Doctor usually is.

Also I don't think it will be uphill battle for the character if the character is interesting. People came to love a female Starbuck, and people loved the Missy character That doesn't even count older characters from the past like Buffy or Xena or a personal favorite and that is Selena Meyers from "Veep." Quality will win out for most people and for those who will never change then it doesn't matter what you do because you will never win their support.

Jason, this is the 21st century. We don't do humor anymore. :ack:

You can't not have the Doctor change into a woman for the first time and not address it with some joke. Look at Tennant to Smith's regeneration. The 11th grabs his legs and fingers shouting in relief that he has them and then in a moment of humor worries that he's become a girl when he feels his hair. Funny stuff, great regeneration.

The joke doesn't need to be Jason's "i need a bra" or Zoom's "COCK SHIT, I NEED A COCK". It can be really subtle and tasteful without being either of those. If it has to be done in a serious way then it really will be an uphill struggle with heavy scrutinization from some fans.

Are they going to follow the tradition that has been established of showing a naked Doctor at some point? Is the world ready? Is the Internet?

Here's one way of showing this:

Still Not Ginger

Here's what she could look like dressed up:

Here's the artist's concept of showing a naked female Doctor: Cheesecake the 13th (respecting any NSFW requirements or individual objections)

Well It's not like the bra joke was something I was even 100% behind. It was just something that crossed my mine. Maybe River Song shows up in a episode and thinks Whittaker is the new companion and tells her something she would never want the Doctor to know but is also funny, not some dark serious secret of anything like that.. Then gets angry at the Doctor for not stoping her from going on about it.

I'm not saying there has to be no humor. I'm saying it shouldn't be a childish boob joke which "I guess I need a bra" is.

And you are absolutely right it needs to be addressed in the show. But I think body humor isn't the best way to go. I haven't seen a suggestion yet that isn't about boobs or a vagina, either explicitly or implicitly.

To me humor is hard to define because it means something different to everyone. I think a bra joke can also be childish as well. It all depends on who makes it, what the context is. Not familiar enough with the actress to know what kind of humor will work best for her. In my mind though I sort of saw the joke being done with some dry British wit.

Also got to admit I trust "Doctor Who" with that kind of joke more than I would say a Chuck Lore show doing that kind of joke. KInd of curious as to how the new show runner is when it comes to comedy? Is he into satire, edgy dark humor, slapstick? Does anyone know his style?

I think a little remark could be made. After all, The Doctor has been male for over 2000 years at this point. It maybe something she'll notice.

Sure. I don't disagree. Of course, she will notice the difference. She should. Or maybe she won't and someone else will.

But, a boob joke, a vagina joke, a silly joke that only a boy would come up with? No.

If we lived in an equitable society, where all things were equal and women weren't judged on their bodies and looks, then I might have a different opinion.

Well, that's taking a tongue in cheek comment and running with it. May as well just have her in the shower with her bum hanging out and her tattoo showing...worked for the third doctor.....
I don't like that costume much I must say. I don't think The Doctor is going to embrace a pinkish magenta as a result of his regeneration...or her new body. At least...I hope not.

If you think only boys make boob or vagina jokes, you haven't seen most British comediennes (probably not really a word anymore, but I always quite liked the word, it sounded classy.) nor seen the Ghostbusters reboot. Or Sarah Silverman.

One thought...I never listened to the Unbound series...was Arabella Weirs Doctor post-regerative still? How did they handle it then.
For the purposes of sanity I am not counting the Curse of the Fatal Death as anything other than a parody.

Been years since I listened to it but I think she was well past the post-regenerative stage and had been hiding from the Timelords for quite some time.

Also in that story-line, a gender change would happen if a Timelord committed suicide so the gender change wasn't unexpected.

I'll speak plainly as it seems the point isn't getting across.

I don't think a childish boob joke is the best way to start of Whitaker's tenure as the Doctor.

Though, that said, I would take a childish boob joke from Sarah Silverman, as she would be able to contextualize it in a way that shows how stupid and sexist boobs jokes are.
