    Recap:
    Produced by Martin Scorcese
Directed by Todd Phillips (The Hangover)
Written by Todd Phillips and Scott Silver (The Fighter)
Set in a "gritty" early 80's gotham
    No Jared Leto
May not be connected to the other movies at all

I think this could be a good thing. Instead of trying to keep up with all the interconnections, they could just tell interesting stories with a mix of actors playing the same roles every once in a while. Maybe a good mix of the bestselling comics and some original stories.

I've never read this, but I already love the fact that Brian Bolland did the art.

I'm all for DC doing stories "out of continuity" but a Joker origin? Feh. I want a Ma Kent movie. ;)

If they really *must* do Joker's origin story, then they'd at least better make sure it's multiple choice.

DC doing non connected films just serms typical of their jumbled approach. Separate cinema and TV universes, Suicide Squad movie before most of the heroes are introduced, everything already up and running.

Doesn't mean it'll be bad, but apart from the tenuous 'multiverse' thing, it's all a bit scattershot...

For a second there I thought it was a gritty 80s Gotham directed by Scorsese which would be interesting.

I like the idea of doing standalone non-DCEU movies, just as long as they find a way to make it clear which are and aren't connected. Kind of a movie version of the Elseworlds line in the comics. Maybe they could even use that as a series title for these?
I'm a little surprised that of all things they decided to start with a Joker origin story, but it could be interesting. I wonder if they'll go for a more traditional version of the character that the DCEU version?

Funny how its three origin stories and as of Rebirth there are apparently 3 Jokers running around.

Do you not see it as damaging ? Not only will there be different current versions of the characters in movies and on TV, casual cinemagoers will find versions with different actors and contradictory plots (otherwise why is it non continuity ?) at the cinema.

No matter if the movies are good or not, the whole thing is jumbled - amateurish and nonsensical. There's a worrying level of incompetence on display here...

    No.
If the movie's good people generally don't care about continuity.

I'm not averse to the idea of standalone films (I said over in the James Bond thread in TV & media that I'd like to see Eon allow maybe period Bond movies made, perhaps for TV with different actors). However, given that the DCEU is just finding its feet, this seems to be a slightly odd and potentially confusing way of doing things, particularly given that marvel and Star Wars appear to be succeeding with their connected/expanded universes. Then again, perhaps this is what DC needs to set itself apart from Marvel.

It could be potentially damaging and/or confusing, but that ship has already sailed. There are already concurrent TV and movie versions of Superman, Flash, Bruce Wayne, Deadshot, Katana and others. Personally, I don't think it will be a major issue. It won't make any difference to people who don't pay a geeks level of attention to these things, and the geeks who do will probably already know the difference going in.

By the time this comes out(if it comes out), along with the 4 already released ones we'll have Justice League, Aquaman, Shazam and Wonder Woman 2 out. DCEU isn't gonna be the "new" thing anymore by then...

Fair point. But it only really became an expanded universe with BvS and so far this version of Joker has only appeared in Suicide Squad. Now we're going to get a new version out of this continuity while Leto is also to return for a film centring on him and Harley. I appreciate that comic fans are used to 'one-shot' takes and differing continuities but I'm not so sure that the casual movie goer, who has gotten used to Marvel and SW's more intricately linked takes, will take so readily.

Then again, I suppose if the film is good enough, it won't really matter.

Sweet Fancy Moses, will this ponderous $hit never end?

Talk about milking the frigging cash cow at this point with endless superhero genre stuff.

I like that better than the homogeneity of the Marvel movies, though they're obviously more successful.

Warner Bros. essentially creating a "Cinematic Elseworlds" franchise isn't going to damage the DCEU any more than creating the Elseworlds "imprint" (or Ame Comi Girls, Tangent Comics, Earth-One, DC's Bombshells, or Gotham City Garage) damaged the "post-Crisis"/"New 52/"Rebirth" comics (read: not at all).
