I wonder how long the waiting lists were to use the holodecks. Officers probably had priority over civilians.

As shown on the show, starship duties is dangerous. Even if you're not killed outright, there's sever injuries, enslavement by the Borg, and just plain old constant fear.

For the average crewmember I think it would be boring after a while, only a select few regularly go on away missions, most labor away inside the ship for months at a time between shore leaves. Never seeing the surface of the exotic planets the ship visit, other than through a window from orbit.

One of the things I thought you saw more of in earlier TOS and earlier TNG was the inclusion of various security personnel and mission specialists on landing parties.

I also assume (head canon alert) that there are a number of random planetary survey missions where different crew mixes are beamed down (see "Ultimate Computer" for example) that are not portrayed in episodes because they are routine.

Okay, but on TOS, the guy that beamed down with all of the main officers.......
Well, he was the one that got killed.
Mmmm, bordom of death, I'd rather just be bored.

I always wondered about like on the bridge they are able to observe such and such in screen, boom! The ship rocks to the left!

Here's me reaching out to flush the toilet. Boom! The ship rocks to the left!
Not a bad thing on scale with the universe, but personally?

It's like there are 2/3 of the ship that is not on duty when stuff happens.
So what are they doing and what happens to them?
Not to mention the children and civilians.

hmm did not know this.. didn't watch much TOS. but like we were saying in Chain of Command TNG thread.. would be good to have as some sort of protocol... on dangerous missions.. almost as a decoy..

id rather sacrifice a red shirt than put our heroes in harms way

Again with that old "the transported you isn't really you" rigamarole.

In-universe, I expect that this issue was already resolved to everybody's satisfaction a long time ago.

In The Ultimate Computer the majority of the Enterprise's crew were beamed to a space station and held in a security area. Sounds like fun.

I always assumed there was a "sign up sheet" where you would reserve a time. I also always imagined seperate holodecks for officers and for civilians.

Yeah...I think you are missing my point.

When the Enterprise arrives at a random planet for a survey mission (not a rescue or a first contact or anything sensitive or prestigious), a roster of specialists is listed to be part of the potential landing party.

That's why I like the episode Lower Decks. It was fascinating to see what life was like for the grunts.
