New companion announced? Hopefully not true...

"Confirmation"? No, just just other tabloids repeating the story. I'm hoping it's not true, but... It's not a choice that sits well with an attempt to lure younger viewers, or transatlantic ones - my suspicion would be that if there's truth in it, he'll be a recurring regular like Camille Coduri, Bernard Cribbins or Matt Lucas, rather than the main everyday travelling companion.

Bradley Walsh would certainly fit into a Wilf-type character, but at this point if his casting is accurate it could mean practically anything. I'm still hoping we get to have a companion not from contemporary earth, or maybe not even human. We haven't seen a non-Earth humanoid mainstream companion since Turlough!

I don't know this guy from Adam but I don't like the idea of a male companion at least not to start. I was hoping Jodie would get to be very much the traditional Doctor but female with few concessions. Hopefully we don't have to get her facing down "Davras" and Cyberwomen. I know that's overreacting and silly but I've been thinking since day 1 they'll probably give us a male companion now.

But in the modern era, the Doctor has had a pretty girl by his side, so that the pervert viewers at home gehind the sofa are thinking, I bet they do it like rabbits between episodes.

Also the male Doctors didn't need a big strong man to open pickle jars for them.

(Modern male companions = Adam, Mickie, Jack, Rory and Nardole.)

Once the Daleks figured out time travel they became dependant on the web of time, therefore they would throw a lot of fights with the younger doctors, to make sure that some sweet future victory still takes place.

I hate to play to stereotypes here, but the "shipping" concerns would be taken care of if the character is gay or androgynous..

On a personal level, I'm envisioning a kind of Watson to Jodie's Sherlock... My only real experience with him is from Law and Order UK, so I see him in a law enforcement kind of role... He thinks of himself as a pretty keen investigator, yet he finds that compared to the Doctor, he's not all that... So he wants to learn... Wants to do some REAL investigating... I dunno.. I guess we'll see..

The impression I got from them making Bill a lesbian was "hey, if we make the character lesbian, we won't be tempted to 'ship' them". I'm sure I saw that in one or two stories over the last year or so.

If that's the case, it's ridiculous. Just don't do it. They have the power as writers to not do things.

I'd put Mickey and Jack both down as re-occuring characters than companions.

I'm not sure - how many trips did Mickey get in the TARDIS?

Oh and if Bradley Walsh got the gig as 13's companion, it would be a simple swap. Freema Agyeman went to L&O: U.K after she left Doctor Who and Ben Daniels was considered for the Doctor after he left Law & Order.

I thought he was pretty good in Coronation Street. I suspect this rumour is just that but I think the idea of an older male companion for the female Doctor is quite an intriguing one.

Bradley has actually been in a couple of episodes of Sarah Jane already, plus in many ways it would be a literal role reversal between the older male and the younger female. Shame though, I don't feel Bill Potts got her fair crack of the whip to develop.

Considering they backtracked on their plans to make Clara someone from a different era, and characters like Jack and River were turned into people who lived through the modern day when they became a serious focus on the show, I'm guessing there some serious opposition to anything but contemporary human companions. The most we've gotten are companions from outside of London, Amy, Rory, and Bill.

Hmm, a though occurred while writing this post. Moffat had in the past spoke of his disdain for modern London episodes, and indeed he didn't start writing them until Clara joined the show. And since Clara is the only companion he wrote who was from London and she was originally meant to be from the past, was having her be from London a concession to what he knew would be a controversial choice by having her from the past?

I'd be okay with Walsh, having seen his run on Corrie and the odd L&O UK, but between his other jobs and the whole fuss and botheration over the first woman Doctor, I wouldn't be surprised to get something like another Amy and Rory instead.

Crazy thought that just occurred to me: Ian and Barbara or Ben and Polly. Recast, obviously, but how would they react to a Doctor so different from the ones they knew? Not to mention that they were always very shippable. Could be fun.

I was going to say. She played the gamut of emotions over three series of Broadchurch. Hell, the few seconds we see her in the reveal video struck me as neither lumpy nor wooden.
