Discovery at STLV. The massive info dump

I hate to tell you this, but the folks on ST: Discovery ARE getting about the same chance TNG got from hardcore Star Trek fans back in 1987. <--- And no I'm not kidding because overall the fans in general were saying TNG would die a quick death and even Paramount at the time had a plan that IF TNG did tank, they'd just include its one season of episodes in their TOS syndication package going forward. Either the Okuda's are viewing the past through rose tinted glasses/or they somehow were unaware of all the fan backlash prior to TNG - which continued until midway through the third season. YES, TNG gained fans, but the majority of fans it gained had really been interested in Star Trek prior to TNG.
I was one of them, hated the new ship, thought Riker should be Captain instead of that damn bald guy.......hated Yar......but the tar took care of her. Then season two they got rid of the doctor and replaced her with an older, meaner one....Season three, yes.........I started to love the show. Still hated the look of the D but everything else was finally feeling "homey". LOL

It reminds me of Roddenberry, when he would decide on what was actually Star Trek or not depending on his mood. TAS was then was not, any movie beyond TMP was then was not.

The plain bottom line is that anything that's been shown on screen by Paramount (and now CBS) is canon. Like it or not.
TAS was actually decannonized for business reasons. There was an ongoing legal issue between Paramount and Filmation (the company who did the storoies and animation for TAS). It was Filmation's contention that the way their agreement was worded - anything they created for TAS (new characters, planet settings, etc.) was OWNED by them - and if Paramount in future films or TV series made use or mention of those new characters/locations - then Filmation was due a royalty fee.

So, to make sure they never had to even consider the possibility of having to pay Filmation royalties - they put out the edict - TAS isn't canon and NOTHING from it should EVER be referenced or used in future Star Trek Universe stories.

(TAS was recannonized after Filmation folded and CBS/Paramount acquired full rights to TAS.)

CBS considers TAS canon.
Well, that's a start anyway. Shit, it's like some people are afraid to re-canonize things like Roddenberry's corpse is going to pop up out of the ground or something and go around strangling everyone who has violated "his vision". If that didn't happen with DS9 or Enterprise, it'll never happen.

The official website said it was canon years ago.

it has not said it was since at lest 2005. Its no longer considered canon. I can not tell you when it was removed, I know Roddenberry did not consider it canon in 89 and its been gone off the list more than a decade.

You and me BOTH ;)

Roddenberry also said some of the movies were not canon. Cannot really go with what he said.

I don't consider TAS canon, either becasue I doubt that "in universe" the entire universe, and one parallel one, were converted to toon shading and then back again.

Even if it isn't officially canon, there are references to it in the other series

The books and comics have also been using stuff from it for years. M'Ress and Arex were major characters in New Frontier, the SCE/Corp of Engineers books had a member of Em/3/Green's race as a major character, and they did a direct sequel to The Time Trap.
At this point the books, comics, and even the other shows have all used content from TAS, so even if it's never been declared canon in some official announcement, it seems to more or less be canon.

Anytime someone says that all fans loved TNG, show them this:
#36

I went to almost every Trek con from '75 to 2002. I talked to a lot of people. I still have their letters. TNG did NOT get universal support, but we know how well the show was received by year 4.
