News Seth MacFarlane’s The Orville

Sorry What? This is a joke right?
Nope, the ENT commentaries reveal from Braga himself that one exec pitched the idea of rotating boy bands boarding the ship giving the crew and the audience the awesome experience of Teen Warblers Amongst The Stars.

As much as I dislike the show, it's clear that for the first few years neither Berman or Braga really got to do anything they really wanted with the show. The Exec notes flowed like Blood Wine apparently.

Hugo - But, hey, they implemented lots of shitty notes on VOY too

What if they had gotten "The Rolling Stones" to do a episode of "Enterprise?" They count as a boy band don't they? Everyone is Male in the band.

^ hey, if Game of Thrones can get away with it...

(Ed Sheeran is close enough, no?)
Add Animal Circus; Coldplay; Wilko Johnson from Dr Feel good as Ser Ilyn Payne; Michiel Huissman had a funk band called Fontane and a solo career; members of power metal group Mastadon were in Hardhome; Natalie Tens (Osha) has a gypsy-funk band called Molotov Jukebox; Icelandic folk group Of Monsters And Men played travelling musicians in The Door; Iwan Rheon used to have a teen rock band called The Convictions (and just released his first solo album); Raleigh Ritchie (Greyworm) has a complete other career as an R&B star, playing Glastonbury a few years ago with Maisie Williams kicking loose on stage with him; Jerome Flynn spent a whole year crooning for 50 year olds back in the 90's; Sigur Ros played the music for Joffrey's wedding in "The Lion And The Rose"; Gary Lightbody, lead singer from Snow Patrol, sings "The Bear And The Maiden Fair" onscreen in "Walk of Punishment"; Plus of course, Hodor has a whole other career as a DO, for which he goes under the name "Rave of Thrones"...

Clearly, not all boybands and most (unlike Sheeran) went completely under the radar. But Weisse & Benioff do like slipping in musical fans of the show when they can :)

I saw this posted another another board:

Seth McFarlane talked about his new Fox sci fi comedy that parodies STAR TREK, “I miss the…aspirational place STAR TREK used to occupy. They’ve chosen to go in a different direction… They can’t all be HUNGER GAMES. There is some space for aspirational… I miss the optimism. I’m tired of being told everything is going to be grim and dystopian…I miss the hopeful side of science fiction.”
He said about comparing THE ORVILLE to the new STAR TREK: DISCOVERY, they “could not be more different” with DISCOVERY “continuing in the new direction they’ve chosen to go with that franchise; we’re more old school.”

Just read IGN's report on the TCA presentation, and I'm with EMH here. This actually makes me look forward to it a lot more, I don't mind most of McFalrane's humor, but I like that it won't be the focus of the show. The article says that the jokes we see in the trailers are pretty much all of the jokes in the pilot, and that Seth was even a bit concerned that they were focusing so heavily on the humor.

I still have no faith that Macfarlane is capable of making anything but shitty comedies, but if nothing else I find I don't quite hate Orville as much as I already hate Discovery, so even if its just every lazy comedy cliche (the whole guy and his ex-wife have to work together [and she's 1000x more talented then him but is his subordinate because "comedy"] is especially irritaiting to me) but done in space I'll still give the first episode a watch. Even if I hate it (which is about as close to 100% likely as you can get without being exactly 100%) I have no doubt it will still be the single best space opera-ish TV show this year, because its only competition is Discovery and Dark Matter and even Macfarlane can probably beat those two just by putting out something that doesn't make me want to break my TV immediately.

Although A Million Ways to Die in the West was for the most part a bad movie, I was impressed with the degree MacFarlane paid tribute to the westerns of old, with an opening credit sequence very similar to old westerns, and the movie itself being filmed in a manner very similar to them as well. In fact, one of my complaints about the movie is it's a shame he went the route of making it typical MacFarlane comedy, as I think if he had gone the route of making a serious western he could have pulled off something quite different and refreshing. So the idea that Orville might be more into story and less into "you remember that time when..." style jokes Family Guy is noted for is promising. Whether or not he can pull it off is the question, but it'll be interesting to see.

Wow...how did we have polar opposite reactions to that article?

I dunno, did you watch his Cosmos?

His ambitions could fill one of the old National Lampoon's "Great Disappointments" list.

Has there been any word on how The Orville will be released elsewhere in the world? Will it be on the likes of Netflix or channels/stations in different countries going to have to bid for it themselves?

^^ Sorry, no idea.

I'm looking forward to this. Visually, it looks great, and the people involved are all saying the right things. I have a feeling it will die a quick death, though, no matter how good it is.
