^ But that's not unique to the current state of the world.
In the old days, the "small box" was newspapers. Now, it's smartphones. A decade or two down the line, it'll be something else. The cycle never ends.
I have a Galaxy S7 Edge and must admit that I'm uncomfortable when it's not within easy reach.
If I read a newspaper on my phone will it cause a rupture in the space time continuum?^ But that's not unique to the current state of the world.

are you under the impression people don't consume and discuss content in a social setting anymore?at least people watched it together and talked about their shows afterwards
Today though it seems to not just distract sometime but all the time. People I think spend every waking moment constantly looking at a phone. Use to you would at least put the paper down once you read it. TV I guess you could say was just as bad but at least people watched it together and talked about their shows afterwards.

I love how Samsung promoted their new phone with the sides cut off the screen, big deal, then a month or two latter Apple seems to have the same idea.. Apple invents stuff bah humbug.
With the old rotary phones you could always dial a wrong number, but at least they couldn't be butt-dialed.I strongly dislike rotary phones. "Did I just dial a 6 or a 7? Shit."
The internet is a great invention (even though there is a lot to rant about it as well) but I just prefer doing all these things on a big screen on my laptop, instead of a small one on a smartphone that I can barely read and have to scroll all the time, and am not able to write long messages on either because there is no keyboard where I can write with all ten fingers.I mean, I have no one to talk to about Star Trek. My gf likes Trek, but she gets tired of it. Other than her when she's in the mood to watch it or talk about it, I literally have nobody to talk to about this thing that is so important to me. So I come here and talk to you guys about it. And I've met lots of cool people on Twitter who love Star Trek. And people on STO. The internet has helped me connect with people in a way that would otherwise be impossible.
So, if you ever see me with my face stuck in my phone....maybe I'm connecting with someone...
I'm 41 so maybe I am to old to see the appeal but I think I hate everything about them. To me a cell phone should be able to make calls, hold phone numbers and have voice mail and that is it. Every time my sisters comes over or I see my nieces or even my mom it seems all they want to do is look at some dumb little box in their hand. Why would anyone watch or listen to something on such a small device and also it would be nice if people actually wanted to talk anymore.
Plus I have a hard time using them. Whenever I swipe I never seem to find what I need to get to and the ability to use the phone option always seems to be some super obstacle instead of the most easy thing to do. I wish flip phones would come back because that was what a cell phone should look like. I can't even pretend like I am talking to the Enterprise anymore without a flip phone which was one of it's biggest charms. The upside is with new phones I can pretend I am Al giving Sam Beckett important information by looking at my hand link but that only works in theory because my hatred of the phones drain any primitive joy out of it.

I don't know how I made it through life without them
