But what about the Claude Rains and Herbert Lom versions?

And, honestly, I'll take the musical over the Hammer Films version any day. :)
Oh, I'm already disqualified by my own rules. I'm now barred, and must name a child "Erik" in order to avoid a family shame. That will be awkward with my daughters.

Far and away, my favorite musical of all time, or my name isn't Erich.

See my criteria is something to aspire to and a goal to attain. You guys are taken it entirely the wrong way but that's fine it's my list. I apply my criteria to myself to so i guess I'm being exclusionary towards myself lol. I didn't consider myself a Trekkie or true fan after watching TOS. I didn't even consider it. I've read more Superman comics than 75-85% of Superman fans out there but because he has so many comics in his canon I don't meet criteria #2 let alone #3 on my list so as much as it pains me to say it I don't consider myself a true Superman fan. Like I said I think there can definitely be different levels if fandom. It's the equivalent of having a rank of captain on the bridge rather commander or lieutenant. We're all on the same ship (fandom) and striving towards the same goals but also differently accomplished in our fandom. You can call it snobbish or whatever but I've put in the hours and money to prove my fandom and it irks me to see immature condescending new comers sprout up and act like know-it-alls. Unfortunately I've learned from the Internet that veteran Trekkies can be just as insufferable and perplexing as the new fans but atleast they've proven their fandom so I have a little more respect for their opinion. It's no different than taking the opinion of a learned man over a non learned man. I respect both men but will probably defer to the learned man a tad bit more especially in his area of expertise.

Yeah those whipper snappers who like Star Trek should know their place! Only we True Fans with the requisite knowledge and experience can be insufferable know-it-alls. They must yield to our unerring wisdom. Peace be upon those humble n00bs who follow the path we have trod for them.

By coincidence, I've been researching the various adaptations of The Phantom of the Opera recently, and you can make a case that the Webber musical is far more faithful to Leroux's original novel than any movie except the original Lon Chaney version (which is airing on TCM next month, btw.)

Getting back OT: I kinda resist the idea that fandom should be some kinda of hierarchy, where some fans "rank" higher than others. We're all in this together.

Yeah but if you can't smother people with trivia to win an argument then what's the point of being a fan of anything?

To be fair, if somebody declares that "Spock's Brain" or "The Way to Eden" are their favorite eps, I'm going to quietly raise an eyebrow (and possibly question their sanity), but I'm not going to demand that they turn in their fan card or accuse them of not being a "real" Trekkie. Because that just reeks of fannish snobbery, and sends a message that Trekkies are cliquish and unwelcoming to newcomers.

"Gatekeeping" is part of a larger syndrome. As genre fiction becomes more mainstream, you invariably see some fans getting all territorial and trying to mark their territory. "I was a fan of that obscure indie band before they got popular," etc.

But you know what? We need to get over that. The attitude that Trek is only for the "real" Trekkies, and that only our opinions matter, is not doing anyone any favors. .

Personally I loved Spock's Brain and think it's gotten a bad rep over the decades. I had it my #6 episode of season 3 for TOS and my #87 episode overall for the entire Trek franchise lol! No joke. I've ranked my top hundred combined episodes along with each shows best episodes according to me of course.

And I will defend "Catspaw" with my dying breath, although that's hardly a popular opinion. :)

Writing a novel sequel to that anytime soon?

Confession: I actually pitched a sequel to CATSPAW once and almost talked the Powers That Be into it. But then they came to their senses and asked me for another idea . . . .

In their defense, my plan was to dial all the Halloween stuff up to eleven: ghosts, giant cats, broomstick rides, etc. In retrospect, I was probably pushing my luck there. :)

(I actually recycled much of the plot in a later book, The Weight of Worlds, after stripping away all the spooky Halloween stuff.)

Tell TPTB that I'd read that book...

If you take out the sheer stupidity of the idea behind it, both in terms of the missing brain and how it is restored, the show is otherwise pretty entertaining. It's certainly superior to the likes of TNG's Justice & Shades of Gray, and frankly quite a few early DS9s & ENTs and a good chunk of Voyager.

Not watching it?
Only alternative I can think of.
But I plan to at least watch the freebie.
Doubt I will pay all access $$ no matter how it grabs me.
Working two jobs and the cost of living just keeps going up as it is.

I saw no Klingons, just some space cockroaches
Interesting point. I am guessing it is the same old 'reinventing the wheel' writers, producers, etc can't resist doing with new movies or shows. Kelvin Universe started the process (echoing TMP if we are fair about it). Even TNG did a variation from the movie head ridges).
In all fairness, the creators are trying to shock or revolt viewers who are no longer surprised by the appearance of Spock as they were initially in the 1960's. He was in the words of some who opposed Trek in that day "the devil's look alike." Check out the ending of TOS Omega Glory. This was how Mr. Gene dealt with that opposition.

Okay, Cox, here's my alternative to Discovery: how about you finish the Ascendants story arc, so I can get some closure, already?
