The New USS Discovery....

It's mine, too! There's no reason to judge the series based on the couple trailers.
And to be perfectly clear, just in general, but I'm reserving judgement regarding whether or not DSC is "Prime" based upon watching the episodes. If it doesn't fit, for whatever reason, then it's a new time line. I'm not a purist in that way, but I will completely respect the production team's statements about the timeline, then judge it for myself when I see the completed product.

It may even be an entirely new timeline altogether. The precedent has already been set in the Abramsverse, so why not?

I, too, will reserve judgment until I get a few eps under the belt. From what I've seen, it looks quite promising and interesting. If the plot, writing and characterization wind up being as good as the production values (wonky transporter room wall appliance notwithstanding), this could be a damn fine show.

Also, Mirror Universe.

To me, I tend not to get that bogged down with timelines and all. To me, I want good stories and good characters. If they get the history right and divergences from that history have a good reason, I'm fine.
Exactly this.

If you are referring to what I said about the CGI, no. I do tv/movie-level VFX for a living and I'm thinking the space shots don't look quite right. They need more work. They don't look bad at all, but it could be improved upon. This is just my own opinion.

No, I was referring to Rahul's post, not yours.

And your renders are fantastic. Unfortunately, I don't really think ship designs are at the top of the list of what the producers of DSC are worried about.

What I love is that the design of Discovery, as well as some other things in the series, are taken from Trek proposals that never happened. We get to see them in action and brought to life! To me, that's exciting to see!

It's mostly the lighting. Everything just "feels" CG. Render engines are to the point now where you can match miniatures if you put enough love into it. When the Shenzhou is moving around, there also appears to be no, or too little motion blur. The movement also feels too fast for a massive ship. Just lots of little things add up to not looking real.

That said, they could still be working on the shots for the next two months, and they'll look awesome when it airs.

Here are a few renders of mine where I tried to get a CG ship to look as real as possible. If I can do this at home, I don't see why they couldn't get to this level on Discovery.

Oh boy, those look FANTASTIC! They really, really look like models.

I have a feeling the CGI of Discovery won't improve much, though. They would certainly be capable to make better shots of, say, the Shenzhou. But it seems they prefer to do more vfx-shots instead of few good ones. So while a simple shot of a spaceship or energy field might look not as good as it could, there will be vfx in almost every scene. Just a guess though.

Yeah. In two(!) 2-3 minute trailers we've got almost 2 seconds of the main ship for the series! Hooray! From an angle that pretty much hides the whole ship...
They're hiding it. Because of how it looks.

The warp effect is nice, though!

Yeah, it's bullshit.

Real simple, now: if they didn't like it they'd change it.

Next.

Exactly, according to the concept art at San Diego, the current design of the discovery was finished in December 2016, long after the first design was revealed.

They had plenty of time to change it if they cared about the fan backlash.
