Is Discovery a war show?

I don't mind it being a war show. I've always suspected it to be as much. There's been plenty of war movies that haven't been all shoot em up action movies. It could still deal with lots of different things. Hell, Chronicles of Narnia was based on World War 2, but I don't recall one gun being fired.

Roddenberry would have a fit no doubt if he was about.:scream:

It reminds me of nuBSG in a broad sense. It's dark and even the manner of how the Klingons arrive on the sensor screen and in space reminds me of how a basestar would appear in NuBSG. It seems completely untethered to what went on before in style and aesthetics to both TOS and Berman-Trek..

All that said, there's no reason I shouldn't enjoy it. But we're not revisiting Trek here, we seem to be seeing something new.

Alexander Orci describes the series the following:
"how do you preserve and protect what Starfleet is in the weight of challenge like war and the things that have to be done in war is a very interesting and dramatic problem"
and:
"They are dealing with real problems in the middle of a war"
and:
"this particular universe is a particular dark time for the Federation and for Starfleet with this war happening"

Who cares what "Alexander Orci" says - he doesn't work on the show.

A few days ago the new trailer for Discovery was shown, and it focused almost exclusively on battles with the klingons. Especially the line of Cpt. Lorca to Burnham "You helped start a war. Don't you want to help me end it?" suggests that the Federation is at war with the klingons during the main timeframe of the series.

Even more revealing are the comments by the creators on the Comic Con panel:

You can add this article to your list:

http://trekmovie.com/2017/07/24/sdc...playing-a-pow-in-pain-on-star-trek-discovery/

"He is a Starfleet officer – Lt. Ash Tyler – who we meet as a prisoner of war. So he comes back onto the ship. He has gone through a lot of horrible, horrible things. He tries to find some normality as he comes back onto the ship. Which he might or might not."

"Yeah [PTSD] is explored in ways. I don’t know how much I can say. It is a very complex and painful and deep character. Hopefully I have done it justice."

Everything I have seen and read about DIS so far makes it appear, like it is a really dark and depressive war story. The opposite of the portrayal of an optimistic and positive future.

Edit:
There is also this interview with Shazah Latif about his character:

Wouldn't that make it the Anti-Star Trek?

He's also the cousin of Jose Tyler from "The Cage"! See we're Star Trek!!!

Because the women aren't 'busty' and 'hormonal' enough? Yeah he did write a lot of memos about important stuff like that.

But on the topic of war, I'd prefer the whole show wasn't about space war, but it doesn't mean the setting generally doesn't give opportunities for very Star Treky plotlines - to do with how you treat an enemy, how you respond to aggression, how you manage ethics in conflict, whether the ends justify the means, the similarities between enemies when they are given the chance to see them, all things Trek has focused on since the beginning. A war doesn't have to mean lots of battle episodes.

I'd take a GoT in space show anyday...might not be like the Trek we've gotten in the past, much of which I now find mostly bland as I rewatch.

Fair enough but I'd still prefer them to be on an adventure to explore strange new worlds, meet new life and new civilizations and maybe boldly go somewhere no one has gone before.

You're not excited for the umpteenth rehashing of Klingon houses battling it out for control of the Empire?!?

You... could say that.

I'm so tired of Klingons in general. I wish we'd see Romulans instead, no matter how much that would violate the sacred continuity.
But my complaint is mostly just about wanting the sense of exploration and fun adventure instead of a war.

What most worries me is Rainn Wilson's comment:

"Let’s remember this particular universe is a particular dark time for the Federation and for Starfleet with this war happening, so I don’t think it would be appropriate in the universe to have as many jolly wackadoo episodes that were often in the original series and the Next Generation."

I really like the jolly wackadoo episodes, and TNG wasn't exactly loaded with them.

(From Trekmovie.com.)
I read that earlier and didn't like it either. Not one bit. But we have to bear in mind this is his perception, and he's not even playing a main character. Other comments from cast and crew don't paint such grim picture.

I don't think you name your ship and the blasted series "Discovery" and then do a series with nothing in it but war, war, war.

An implicit promise of space battles in the premiere is probably smart to maximise viewers initially (just like Wolf 359 with DS9's premiere) and then once your audience is maximised you hold as many as possible with some compelling stories.
