Is Discovery a war show?

To pump up the drama GoT style.. I imagine there will be a heaping spoonful of violence and dark broodingness, with a sprinkle of depressing trauma, and the occasional funny moment/character.

This is my fear. But, to be charitable, I'm trying to think of it as being like "Wrath of Khan" rather than GoT.

The less GoT influence, the better.

Doubtful that I'll get my wish though...stupid GoT.

Star Trek without the occasional humor mixed in will get old after a while no matter what they do in each episode. It's just something we expect. I'm pretty sure we'll get some of that.

I don't think it will retroactively hurt TOS at all. I always assumed that the federation had been through a few wars in the past, some of them recent, and that they still came out of it as a civilization that wants to explore and practice diplomacy and generally act how we've seen them act.

I'm more worried about Discovery. We were told there was going to be a lot of exploration and well... discovery. I realized that it would be set in the background of a war but I still hoped they'd find a way to fit those in.

Probably than we would expect.

TNG did this quite well by weaving a sense of humor throughout situations, rather than the tidbit at the end. Even an episode like "Disaster" which was supposed to be about...a disaster, had some very comedic moments.

I would prefer that mixing in of humor throughout because life is like that.

Mad Men managed some wackadoo stuff even in its rather grounded, somewhat grim tone. But I will miss the straight-up light comedy eps, if they're not there.

I think, based on what the producers said, discovery will be more of a show about attaining peace than it is a war show. In respect to the humor aspect, I hope it is similar to Beyond in how the premise was sad with the ship being destroyed and everything plus much of the show involved battles, yet they still had plenty of humorous moments between the characters and even the battle scene where they played Sabatoge to destroy the swarm ships was humorous

Basically the new canon version of what was once dubbed as the "Four Years War" during the 1980s.

If there is a major battle in this series that takes place at Axanar, people will have a fit.

I think DSC is just as capable of that, if not more so.
That's been my impression as well, that while it will deal with a war, it'll focus on trying to find a way to bring about a peaceful end to the war, rather than just blowing up as many Klingons as possible.
And for those wanting old fashioned Trek exploration, I don't see there being a lot of chances of that. They've said since the beginning that this was going to be one big arc, so we aren't going to be getting planet of the week exploration stories. It sounds like there will be some exploration, and strange new worlds and new civilizations, but they will all tie back into the main arc of the conflict with the Klingons. My theory is that we might be getting some kind of McGuffin hunt as the season goes on.

I was really disappointed after watching the trailer, and my first thought was that it looks to be a really dark and depressing show. I was hoping they would focus more on science and exploration, as others have mentioned, rather than battles and conflict. Such things are inevitable, but I really hoped they would not be the focus.

I'm trying to remain optimistic, remembering that even the promos for TNG, when I watch them back now, almost always misrepresented the stories by showing only the most violent scenes, when really that one shot of a phaser battle that looked so dramatic was really just someone messing around on the holodeck in the first five minutes of the episode. Previews and trailers are often misrepresentative, so of course I will give the show a chance.

I just wish I could be more excited about it.

Star Trek was always great when it had a broad diversity of stories:

1. Exploration / Scientific Discovery
2. War / Conflict / Intrigue
3. Diplomatic Mission
4. Rescue / Support Mission
5. Time Travel Stuff
6. Fun Episodes

I know there's less time available for DSC to accomplish all this...but hopefully the show is diverse from a tone and story standpoint as TNG and TOS were with the various stories they did. I'd like to see them at least do 2-3 to maintain that great balance.

Not trying to be contrary, but I for one am looking forward to a well-made 15-episode novel telling a war story or a story with a war as the backdrop in the Star Trek universe. I love the lighter side of Trek, too. As much as I love the romantic, weird, scientific and silly stuff. But we had all that. I'm open for whatever they want to tell us and everything I've seen so far makes me confident that it'll be awesome. I'm sure there will also be humorous moments, but I guess a straight-up comedy episode is something they might do at a later point.

My thinking is that the funny moments will come out of the ensemble they've put together as a cast. They seem to get along incredibly well, and that kind of chemistry generates humorous moments by just their acting or reacting to something.

Doug Jones said he would sometimes come off as Spock or Data, so some of those lines about not understanding something or saying something off will be funny.

I don't doubt we'll get some of this, but that's not the same as serving up something as fun and frothy as Shore Leave. I just hope they don't leave the option for that sort of storytelling off the table.

Curiosity of mine is whether or not that specific type of storytelling would fit in a contemporary television series? "Shore Leave" is a lot of fun, and I thoroughly enjoy it, but it still carries many tropes of 60s scifi of the completely wacky world.

Which is fine, but Star Trek moved past that a little bit with each passing series.

Shore Leave with all its zaniness could work if they go with a more traditional 'Alice' scenario. Meaning everyone trips on some space mushrooms and imagines their adventures while still on the ship staring at a blank wall. :wtf:
