Well, since Sam would have been born before the timeline split, he'd still have the same name.

Let's not forget though that the entire timeline would have to been changed going all the way back to the Big Bang. If you go back and alter the past it alters the future that alters future trips back to the past, which means in one case "Voyager" is never sent to the Big Bang by Q or the Temporal Code War didn't happen or it happened differently. That means he could have gotten a different name.

That's a serious stretch.

Not really. Time travel in a universe filled with constant time travel would create some very major alterations all the time. Only thing that seems to keep things from totally going out of control is the Trek universe seems to operate on some "destiny" clock were some things are meant to be, such as all the Ds9 characters being at terrok Nor in the "Mirror Universe" or how the Enterprise crew still ended up together in the Kelvin Universe.

Yes, but the number of "what ifs" to make it actually happen is almost infinitesimally impossible. Remember "Year of Hell"? Also, the explanation wasn't seen on-screen either. By that same logic, you could just magically explain away any inconsistency.

I thought the trailer was neat. I like the tone and hope that the the show keeps to this kind of seriousness but not too much angst. The only thing I didn't like was the warp effect. It's too much like Star Wars.

That's true but Kirk having a brother with a different name doesn't seem all that much of huge difference between both timelines. Plus the fact he was written to be his brother sort of brings in "writers intent" into the picture plus deleted scene. It's enough to buy into it if someone wants to.

It seems to be setting lots of angst to me. Burnham seems to be dealing with pressure from Sarek, guilt maybe for her first captain and conflict with her new one. I like it myself just as long as they explore it and don't just insert in in between moments of explosions. I am expecting a fun adventure show but it might be kind of like "Angel" were the lead is always in bad mood.

Someone said something that got me thinking. They have said Discovery is sticking fully to Fuller's vision. He said that the TOS episode Balance of Terror was a cornerstone of this series, but obviously Romulans can't be shown in the series (unless they do it right like Enteprise where they operate from afar or in disguise among Vulcans). What if these Klingons are like the Romulans who broke away from Vulcan but have returned because they are tired of seeing their people fighting each other instead of a common foe? We know that this group is here to unite the 24 Klingon House which leads to the Federation/Klingon Cold War.

At the risk of getting side-tracked, but David Boreanez played Angel with so much humour..! Hope Discovery will be able to balance humour as well as in Beyond, which was just so great in doing that I think.

Well he was funny but he did brood quite abit, which in itself led to humor.

Can I say, my favourite part of the trailer is when Captain Lorca says the line: "We are creating a new way to fly!', whilst we see the Discovery preparing to warp, and the music has ramped up a notch / tempo.

That scene gets me very excited! :D

Did anyone else thing they way the Klingon Sarcophagus ship is propped up on that planet (I assume it's when T'Kuvma finds it) might be a conscious nod to the way they find the alien derelict ship in the original Alien movie?

Yep.

I do wonder though if they ever lose power and the lights go out will anyone notice a difference? The show seems very darkly lit. Do you think casual fans will go for that? I think one the reasons the Marvel movies are popular is because they do seem to be bright and very cheerful stuff with tons of humor. Shouldn't they be the example of what casual fans go to when it comes to genre stuff these days? The new "Alien" movie flopped and so did some of the non-fun WB comic book movies until "Wonder Woman."
