No. I just recognized it as Klingon armor, not some D&D rip off. I've seen plenty of those since I do table top from time to time.

And if the Torchbearer means Dragon gets more work, then I'm all for it. And, no, I don't see any Necromonger references, since most of that had a very rank and file look to it, save for Lord Marshall.

I'm pretty sure you're just agreeing with yourself at this point...since no one else has mentioned Riddick except for you.

Do you complain this much about the differences between TOS and TMP era Klingons? Probably not.

The only thing that's recognizably Klingon in that whole batch of pics is the Klingon logo itself. If it weren't for that or the word "Klingon" at the bottom of all that concept art, I wouldn't have spotted any of it as Klingon. Except that hooked bat'leth. But that looks like something you'd buy in an "international store" at the mall. Trying real hard to look like a thing, but not similar enough to get sued. The Torchbearer looks vaguely like something from a Thor movie, and the odd web-neck armor piece looks like something a Drow from D&D would wear. (Lifelong Trek fan, comic nerd, and D&D player.)

I'm pretty sure the influences of the artists involved go beyond Riddick. They seem to be drawing on various medieval armors as inspiration.

IDK - the TOS displays (enginerring for example) seem to be at much HIGHER resolution (almost like the graphs were printed on plastic ;) - but still if you take them for the computer displays they are supposed to be - much higher/finer resolution then what we see on the U.S.S. Shenzhou in the on promo. ;)

Man there's so so many great things here that I would love to gush over individually but there's so many I don't have the time. I hope when this is all over we can get a consolidated post or maybe even an article with the best pictures of each thing. I just want to say that I'm loving just about everything I'm seeing.

The white is there for that exact reason - when you're trying to be clean, you want colours that will show up blood and other fluids so you know when you've been contaminated. We do the same thing today with green/blue scrubs, which contrast well with red (the medical colour in the TOS Movies went this way too). You don't want to wear dark clothing which will hide splashes of fluids. It's deliberate.

That really hasn't happened yet. The design stuff that's come out so far may have been different to what went before but it's pretty instantly recognisable. We've seen enough bridges and transporter rooms at this point to spot one when it appears in the wild. And how anyone can look at aliens with clear forehead ridges, a nose appliance, a thing for bladed weapons and stylised shoulder armour and not think 'oh, that'll be the Klingon then' I don't know.

If any other show featured these characters Trekkies would be listing dozens of obvious bits of proof that the designers "are just ripping off the Klingons."

To be fair the "Klingon" power armor /spacesuit does looks like something out of The Chronicles of Riddick.

But so what? The blue Starfleet uniforms look like something out of Mass Effect or The Expanse.

Given the shape of a humanoid, there are only so many ways to do a suit of armour. Riddick, Discovery, Stargate, everyone else who has done an armoured race or group ultimately hark back to actual suits of armour because that is what they are emulating. In fact, the times that it takes me out of science fiction is when they do something that only exists in sci-fi (like the ridiculous boob armour that some franchises insist on) and therefore could only be a costume.

Interesting that you chose a late Tudor /Elizabethan era armor for your example. The "Klingon" costumes we had seen so far also look very Elizabethan, at least in shape. :shifty:

And there's nothing more ridiculous than some examples of real historical codpiece armor.

Star Trek was more grown up, content wise, in the 1960's. You're mistaking production limitations for content.

To be honest, I'd much rather it be fun than "grown-up". I get "grown-up" everyday when I walk outside my door.

Clearly they are apping Farscape because no one would know what they are ripping off ;)

I can agree on this point.

I mentioned it in a post before, but what we see here is the imagination of Star Trek with production values that are catching up with it.

The content has yet to be seen, but from what very little hints given by the cast and production team, that will also be very good.

With the homework and hard work being done on the look, I'm hoping DSC has as much work being done in the direction and scripts.

I'd have to have seen fucking Riddick to agree or disagree.

I can deal with Diesel when he's driving cars fast.

Personal point of view I guess. I never really understood the make comments on things out of context. Doesn't make sense to me.
