Jodie Whittaker is the 13th Doctor

I mean Christ, the TARDIS herself is a sexless, asexually reproducing, moonsized singular lifeform made of a form of spaceborn coral life organic material, and she still identifies female when she finally has the chance to "meet" the Doctor as a holographic projection to tell him she "chose" him and started him on all this.

Going so far as to have a catty relationship with Clara so that she "knew" the TARDIS from her personality rather than physical form so that when she encountered the room full of TARDii she was able to guide William Hartnell to her in the past in the biggest subtle causual loop in TV history.

No one freaked the hell out over that reveal.

She will still make references to being a father/grandfather once if it comes up.

Speaking of which. I can see a family resemblance to Susan in a tv/movie kind of way.
If they had cast her as a returning slightly older Susan instead of the Doctor, I would have bought it...

Does this mean sexist fans will stop watching Doctor Who ? Nooo! Of course not! They will watch every single episode of Whittaker's Era and complain 24/7 about the "evil PC and SJW Agenda". Prepare yourselves, folks. The next three years will be a loooong ride.

Honestly, I never been so hyped to see a new Incarnation of the Doctor since I became a fan. When Capaldi was announced I wasn't quite familiar with his work. Jodie Whittaker is the opposite. She's already a familiar face to me. I absolutely loved Attack the Block. Also, she's one of the reasons why "The Entire Story of You" is such a memorable Black Mirror episode. And I still don't like that much Crime Dramas, but I was convinced to keep watching Broadchurch because I was amazed by her work alongside Colman and Tennant. So, yeah, I'm quite thrilled to see what she'll do as the Thirteenth Doctor.

Who said Missy was dead? She's Missy. She's been dead before and gotten over it.

To me, there has always been something avuncular or grandfather like to the Doctor, and I've always asociated that with a man.
For the record, this is the only argument in this entire thread that actually tries to justify the Doctor being a man and not a woman (and it's from someone who goes on to say they're keeping an open mind).

She needs coaxing and encouraging. And it wasn't really a reveal...it was known. She loooks like an angry mother when she turns up at the end of Satan Pit. Or wife. The expression on her blue doors was all 'what time do you call this?'
I wonder how she took the happiness patrol sticking some slap on her.

It's the feline quality. I see what you mean. They could still pull a switchers and have that happen. Would be interesting, and make Doctor something more of a mantle. I wouldn't bet on it though.

My point is, why would a form of life that size of a celestial body made of something not remotely like human tissue that can live for tens of thousands of years get a free pass wanting to be a woman, but her sapient humanoid shapeshifting pilot gets a deluge of hate for the same thing?

I just don't understand.

If Romana was trying on non-human bodies, then changing gender should be a snap.

Besides as mentioned, the pump has been primed with the Corsair, The General, and the Master.

And I recall reading Lungbarrow, where it turned out that Time
Lords aren't born in the conventional sense, which makes gender an affectation for them, rather than an expression of sexuality with regards to reproduction.

The Doctor is always human in appearance for audiences to relate to. That's the only limitation on the character. Technically he could regenerate into a Zygon, then he'd be a full time shapeshifter, and we could have new actor/actress each week with no worries about a regeneration limit.

Because the Doctor and the TARDIS are TWU LUVS and clearly that MUST be a MAN AND WOMAN and the TARDIS is OLD GIRL or something.

I like the contradictions and absurdity. Yea, fine I'm sexist then, what ever makes your sweet little social justice warrior heart feel better.. Enjoy labeling me, feel superior yet? Bahh!. Thought NAZI!

Why are you here?

Meanwhile...

I saw rumours about Jodie Whittaker online before the reveal, and thought, yes, please. We're getting someone who can do drama, someone who can do genre material, and someone who obviously has a good relationship with the showrunner, given that they've worked together for three series of Broadchurch. There was a time I might have wanted Suranne Jones to be the first female Doctor, but she's already been the embodiment of the Tardis, so that would have been odd. Jodie Whittaker will do just fine.

Yeah while I quickly became a huge fan of Capaldi's Doctor, I can't say the casting really got me terribly excited about the show again. But this somehow feels different and has me as hyped for the new season as when Moffat and Smith first took over.

It's not enough just to have a new showrunner; I think they really needed to do something bold and exciting with the casting too, and they definitely did.

And I would like to add that, from the reveal trailer, I do really like the vibe I'm getting from Jodie's take on the Doctor.

My thoughts that I posted elsewhere...

I was hoping the Doctor would stay a man. To me, the Doctor is a man like Wonder Woman is a woman and Harry Potter is British (this is a reference to Steven Spielberg's asinine idea to do an American Harry Potter). I know Chibnall said he wanted a female Doctor but I strongly believe the BBC would have been too terrified of the backlash from SJW's to cast another man as the Doctor. Approaching most thing from a PC standpoint is a recipe for disaster.

That being said, it's an interesting change and I'm curious what kind of stories this will to. I've seen Jodie Whittaker on Broadchurch and she was really good in it. She's worked with Chibnall for the last three years so there's a familiarity there. I've always found the acting on Broadchurch to be really good despite having an average to pedestrian storyline at best.

I hope a female Doctor avoids obvious stereotypes although this does go into new territory for the Doctor. 13 will have to deal with rampant sexism when she travels back to the past, where women were viewed as little more than property of their husbands or wives.

I imagine a female Doctor almost guarantees the next companion will be a man. If you're going to shake up the status quo by making the Doctor a woman, then make the companion a man. Or at the very least a man and a female. No doubt that will make the love triangle fans go crazy, even if the male and female companions are in a relationship with one another.

The one thing a female Doctor has going for her is that Steven Moffat will NOT be writing her. His female characters are TERRIBLE and Moffat has been prone to the occasional sexist attitudes and comments himself. His treatment and comments on the Molly Hooper character in Sherlock being a prime example.

Am I happy with this change? No. But I'm willing to give it a chance and see where it goes. It's definitely something different and maybe it will give the show the spark it's been needing for a long time.

Sweetie, it's the internet. There's been Doctor/TARDIS lesbian slashfic long before today.

Who said Missy was dead? She's Missy. She's been dead before and gotten over it.

Seriously: It's just tradition at this point for a seemingly dead Master / Missy to pop up out of nowhere, for the Doctor to say, "But ... I saw you ..." and for Master / Missy to respond, "I got better! Now, behold my evil plot, mwahahaha!"

I do agree, if the ratings are bad for the next Doctor, sexism will be the one and only thing blamed for it.

"Okay, cutting to the chase. Not dead, back, big surprise, never mind."
