WB's Justice League 2017 movie pre-discussion thread

Of course, there was talk at one stage in the 1990s that Richard Donner wanted to make a BvS movie. His choices would supposedly have been his regular leading man Mel Gibson as Bats and Daniel Day-Lewis as Supes.

I gotta call bullshit on that one. Donner at that point wouldn't have agreed to a well-known star like Daniel Day-Lewis to play Superman. He's stated often times that "Superman: The Movie" would never have worked with a celebrity like Robert Redford or Burt Reynolds, as the Salkinds originally planned, because the audience wouldn't see Superman, but Redford or Reynolds. Parts of this scenario might be true, but that bit I simply cannot imagine.

Well, that's why I use the word 'supposedly.' It was just a rumour doing the rounds. IIRC I saw it in Empire or SFX. Another supposed dream team on his wish list was George Clooney (this was after Batman and Robin) and (wait for it!) John Travolta! The Man of Lard?!

Of course, don't forget that DDL, while an Oscar winner for My Left Foot, was not then quite as well known or prolific as he is now (no Spielberg, Scorsese or Paul Thomas Anderson movies yet). And he he was then (and arguably still), an actor first and movie star second - he vanished and vanishes into roles, rather than having a screen persona like the others you mentioned.

Edit - having googled it, while I can find interviews with Donner talking about last year's BvS, he never mentions 'his' version, so I suspect that the original story was indeed wishful thinking!

It's currently playing in theaters. ;)

(there won't be an ultimate or extended edition when it comes out on home media)

Oh . . . too bad.

I see the composer situation as a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation for Joss. While he I'm sure he intends to follow through with Zack Snyder's vision, he has still been tasked with finishing this film and making decisions that he feels are best for the final product. That is the job he signed on for, and he has been given the final say. From this point on, he has to do what he feels is best for the movie. Is this the same decision that Zack would have made? Perhaps not. But the studio must have backed the decision, or else the decision would never have been made.

I have a deep suspicion that whatever Whedon does, he'll only do it with Snyder's okay.

I know they're wanting to keep Superman's reveal a secret but the posters and promo items that include him aren't helping. I also hope they show Steppenwolf in the next trailer. Sure, they'll get skewered for it because DC isn't allowed to show villains in trailers but I'd like to see their take on Steppenwolf.

The rumor is that Superman is going to be revived by Steppenwolf and brainwashed to think that Batman allowed Lois to die, thus making Superman temporarily evil. After playing Injustice 2; I'm kind of burned out on the bad guy Superman trope.

I hope that does not turn out to be true. I hated the notion in BvS, and I'll hate it here too if it comes to pass. I find the idea that someone like Superman would turn completely, world-devastatingly evil because Lois died quite idiotic. I don't care if it's been done in other media before, it doesn't mean I have to accept it here.

Well everyone knows he's in the movie, so I don't think posters really spoil anything.

Featuring some big Superman moments(like his return) in the trailers would be a mistake though.

That's a really stupid internet "rumor" that's just rehashing the plot of Injustice and trying desperately to tie it with the events of BvS. I highly doubt that we will see Superman fighting against Batman (and the rest of the Justice Leaguers) yet again in the subsequent film.

And in Injustice Superman didn't turn completely, world-devastatingly evil because Lois died. He turned the-end-justifies-the-means security-and-order-above-all evil after Lois Lane was killed... While carrying his unborn child... And Metropolis was obliterated... Along with about 10 million inhabitants... So almost everyone Clark Kent knew was also killed... And Superman was partly responsible. So that kinda ruins your disposition. And finally it was another universe's Superman and not our own.
It's not totally dissimilar to Hal Jordan's Parallax comic book arc.

That's cool. I only added the thing about other media in case it had happened before somewhere, I didn't wanna get a "I didn't hear you complaining when..." retort. :)

The bit in BvS was bad enough. If it's just a dream, not so bad (although I'd have preferred they dropped it) but if it's a vision of the future, bleccch!

The brainwashing theory is most likely based on "Legacy", the finale of the Superman animated series, where Superman is brainwashed by Darkseid to believe himself the adopted son of Darkseid, and commands an invasion of Earth. This, again, is inspired by the "Legends" crossover of the 80s, during which Superman is brainwashed by Darkseid to inspire and lead a rebellion of the Hunger Dogs as an agent provocateur to lead them to their death.

There's nothing indicating Superman will be brainwashed in JL, other than the New Gods being part of the movie. My guess is, like so many of these movie rumors, it's some fan out there who likes the idea and wishful thinking makes them think it's definitely what's so going to happen.

I swear I saw an Orion action figure somewhere.

Making Superman evil is dumb, the public doesn't want to see that over heroic Superman.

That's one way to get me to hate Cavill's mopey Superman even more than I already do. Poor Cavill keeps getting screwed over by Snyder!

I definitely don't

With Cavill...I think the ACTOR is a great fit for the role, but I agree... Snyder did him a huge disservice. We haven't had a "mature" Superman to have an "evil" Superman be a good storyline. Hmm... speaking of which... would an "Earth 3" type of storyline be feasible for a MOVIE? If you wanted dark characters, THAT would be the way to explore it.

Also, is there any word on who the 7th Justice Leaguer will be? Most likely Green Lantern..but which one? ANd will it be at the end?
