I like what she said. She gets what Star Trek is about. In fact, in my 33 years of being a fan, I've met people who said they were fans but were far from those who embraced any kind of diversity or allowing different people to have different ways of thinking.

I don't begrudge people who watch for the fun and adventure (hell, that's what part of what makes it great!), but to not even recognize at least some of the story being told is puzzling to me.

Misleading title. This article only applies to fans who are disgruntled with CASTING choices.

Are these all crazy twiter complainers? Because I haven't seen any type of response like these people are talking about.

You'll see it in Facebook comments a lot. Twitter too. I just avoid the Facebook stuff, it's really toxic there.

I'm not even seeing it on the Facebook pages either. I keep seeing these articles about the outrage, and most of the comments are either agreeing that the outrage is bad, or saying that the articles are just muckracking.

I don't doubt for a minute that there are pondscum complaining about SMG and Michelle Yeoh, but I also think some of the news outlets are force-feeding them oxygen to fan the flames.

We've had three or four pop up here in the last few months, as well as when the castings were being announced. Generally of the "what story purpose does casting someone who isn't a white male / having a gay character serve?" variety where they're Just Asking Questions.

I try to watch shows with more progressive/diverse casting and it only helps the show. I work in an office in the Chicago suburbs, and there is every kind of ethnicity you can think of in this region, and our small-ish still manages to represent that pretty well. Seeing it on a show/movie only helps sell that idea of a diverse world.

These complainers must be living in bubbles, that they think casting people of color is forcing the issue.

Guess they never watched older Treks. Blacks, Asians, Hispanics, and more were on Trek from the beginning and in all of the series. So *yawn* to their tantrum.

    I love what she says:

“Well, I would encourage them to key into the essence and spirit of Star Trek that has made it the legacy it is — and that’s looking across the way to the person sitting in front of you and realizing you are the same, that they are not separate from you, and we are all one,” she said. “That’s something Star Trek has always upheld and I completely believe that is why it’s been a mainstay in society in the hearts of so many people for so many decades. I would encourage them to look past their opinions and social conditioning and key into what we’re doing here — which is telling a story about humanity that will hopefully bring us all together.

“And it’s hard to understand and appreciate Star Trek if you don’t understand and appreciate that,” Martin-Green added. “It’s one of the foundational principles of Star Trek and I feel if you miss that then you miss the legacy itself. I’m incredibly proud to be the lead of this show and be at the forefront of an iteration of Star Trek that’s from the eyes of a black woman that’s never been done before, though obviously there’s been other forms of diversity that have been innovated by Trek. I feel like we’re taking another step forward, which I think all stories should do. We should go boldly where nobody has gone before and stay true to that.”

Well, the comments section under the original EW article quoting Green is a real cesspool of deplorables. Then again, a lot of those people probably aren't even Star Trek fans. But also, if you look at the TrekCore posting about this, there are a couple pretty disturbing comments from Trekkies complaining about how diversity is supposedly being shoved down their throats. I don't know how prevalent this type of backwards thinking truly is among Trekkies, but reading about it sure is contributing to my depression.

Yes, indeed. This is why most of the time I tend to avoid the comments section now. It's really better for your health. I think have to remind ourselves that this is just a very vocal but tiny minority believing nonsense like this.

Exactly. The Network wants to generate ersatz controversy to push this show and create ersatz "news", so it finds a few Facebook Klanners and creates a National Crisis.

I always figured Zuckerberg was good for something that justified all that money.

You'll find this kind of nonsense over on the Trek Prop Zone forum. I quit that place. Feels dirty.

Anyone who ever complains about diversity being shoved down their throats is really offended by the very existence of people who aren't like them. They're all bigots and deserve to hide in shame.

Diversity for the sake of diversity is poor story telling. Diversity that's contributes to the story is not actually diversity, it's drama.

Edit to add: In 200 years if blacks and whites are still quarreling amongst themselves, then we got bigger problems than Klingons anyway.

Well, it's not diversity for the sake of diversity, it's diversity for the sake of humanity. More precisely, depicting a diverse humanity would be, I believe and expect, for establishing part of the setting, so that the drama occurs with respect to the diverse species that is humanity. Not all aspects of the diverse humanity need to specifically be a focal point for drama.

However, perhaps somewhat paradoxically, the lack of drama, with respect to certain of these myriad diversities that people today find objectionable, would itself be a kind of story point. Wouldn't it? It would be saying that people in the 23rd century don't find these things objectionable, again to establish that aspect of the setting.

As others have basically said already, that setting is implicitly hopeful. Humanity is not like the Borg. We accept differences among ourselves.
