Power Rangers

I guess it's good that these nutjobs so often feel the need to share on social media. Then again, I think maybe I'm the crazy one since I'm the only person I know not on social media. Anyway, it certainly looks to have been a good thing here likely preventing the situation from escalating past where it did.

I love that in addition to three large-caliber handguns, a shotgun and a combat knife that he had throwing stars on him. Talk about delusional...

I had a Super Sentai-themed dream last night -- oddly, since I've seen far less SS than I have Power Rangers. It revolved around a team whose costume theme was based on the Rangers' civilian professions, which is a gimmick I don't think they've used yet except in specialized categories like rescue workers (GoGo-V). I think the henshin devices/morphers involved rings that the Rangers had inherited or otherwise owned without realizing what they were, and the rings had gems in the shape of a lightning bolt, albeit flatter and more squarish than the MMPR logo. Anyway, the part of the dream I remember seemed to focus on the recruitment of additional Rangers beyond the core team, since they seemed to have used up all the big-ticket professions you'd expect like cop or construction worker and were recruiting people like the Transit Security Ranger and the Fashion Designer Ranger.

There were also these two older mentor characters, presumably from the previous generation to possess the rings/powers (though I'm interpreting what little I recall from my dream and probably making it more cohesive than it was), and they had been feuding bitterly for decades. When they learned that their sons or proteges -- who I think were the leaders of two rival Ranger teams as in Hurricanger/Ninja Storm, or maybe just the Red Ranger and his Sixth Ranger rival -- had inherited their feud and were fighting to the death on a mountaintop (or at least on a mound of rubble in a rock quarry), the mentors buried the hatchet and intervened to stop the feud and bring the whole team together. I think the Fashion Designer Ranger was recruited as part of this, because one of the mentors gave a surprisingly Marxist speech about how textile workers were essential to the community, or something.

What's amusing to me on writing this out and re-reading it is that nothing in my dream seems too weird to actually be done on Super Sentai, aside from maybe the random bit of proletarian politics (which was an echo of something I read the night before). If anything, it actually sounds like a pretty plausible premise for SS. Which is interesting, since I haven't even had SS/PR on my mind lately.
 
Regarding the Power Rangers reboot film's budget vs worldwide profits, Lionsgate heavily subsidized it, and has already earned a heavy return on the portion of financing that they themselves provided, so the fact that it may only end up grossing 138 million dollars worldwide doesn't actually mean much in terms of potential sequels because, for Lionsgate specifically, the film has earned them significant money.
 
I just got this today for $0.25 at the local library sale

I think its a magazine (although the paper is tougher then a magazine, almost cardboard-ish). It seems to be complete (I only took a few pics, I didn't photograph the whole thing but there is more to it then what I show). All the pages inside are two page pics, and they all match. Only the front cover and back cover don't seem to make one pic, although looking at the spine it doesn't look like anything has fallen/been ripped off.

The pics don't really show how, while the edges of the page have normal wear, the images are all very crisp. Its in good condition for something that I'm assuming is about 30 or so years old (it doesn't look like its a reprint or anything, although if there is a specific date I can't tell because its all in japanese). It looks like its introducing/showing off Flashman, so I'm assuming it came out around the time the show did.

I have no idea how this thing lasted 30 years and then ended up mixed into a bunch of bargain kids books at a public library sale in a small town in the US, but its one of the coolest things I've found at the monthly library sale, and definitely the most surprising. I only knew it was there because I heard a young kid say

"Oh, look, Power Rangers! Aw, I can't get it. Its not in English".

He walked away, and I was intrigued by what I heard so I went over and found this. I never would have thought to look in the pile of little kids books. So, a cool little discovery.

This makes zero sense. The 100m production budget is a loss, and we can assume it was compounded by another 100m in (lost) advertising costs. So, the movie must likely make the studio - not the studio plus the theaters, the studio itself - at least 200m to recoup initial losses before seeing a profit. Worldwide, the movie has made $140m, and a large chunk of that went to theaters. The movie will have to do gangbusters in home media to avoid losing the studio money overall.

I have no idea. I can't find anything about it, which isn't surprising since even sites that talk about Flashman toys probably aren't going to talk about something like a magazine. Maybe if I could search japanese sites, but that doesn't really work when you can't speak/read Japanese. Still, I was excited and surprised to find this. I'm sure when you consider that this was probably only printed in Japan, and its 30 years old, that there aren't that many of them, especially in the US. I'm just happy to have found it.

That is not how Lionsgate, as a studio, operates. Lionsgate themselves spent 35 million on the film directly, with the remainder of the 100 million that made up the film's total budget being contributed by other entities.
 
^ And if those "other entities" lose money on their investment, you think that won't "actually mean much in terms of potential sequels" because they'll happily finance another movie, or, if not those same other entities, others will?
 
It depends on the degree to which each individual entity beyond Lionsgate contributed funding and whether or not they do in fact lose money relative to however much they contributed.

The movie's floppage absolutely "means much in terms of potential sequels."

The film hasn't been declared a "flop", though, and there's not actually any way of knowing, at this stage, whether or not its myriad international financiers/distributors made or lost money on it.

Lionsgate itself recouped the 35 million dollars they spent on the film directly, plus an additional 25 million on top of that.

There's another factor as well - toy sales. Saban especially would be looking at how successful the film was a toy commercial.

I wouldn't be surprised to see another movie, but it may be at a lower budget. Saban is a master of low budget stuff; that model is really what Power Rangers is based on in the first place.
 
Finally got to see the movie. Its a flawed movie that needed, from an action standpoint, to take less inspiration from movies like Chronicle and Transformers and more from the show its based on. It also needed more of them as Power Rangers a lot earlier instead of
not showing them all as rangers until the 90 minute mark
. But the movie's solid cast brings an average movie up quite a bit, to the point where I'd love to see a sequel that took the good writing of the main 5 Rangers and added more Power Rangers style action.

So I liked it, despite some rather big flaws.
 
I just watched the new movie and I was really disappointed. Maybe kids in 30 years will feel nostalgic about this movie, but I doubt it. It's just missing everything that made the TV show fun. Barely any morphing, extremely dark lighting through most of the film, etc. They should have just made it for kids. It would have been more enjoyable.

This trend is getting rather annoying. I've sat through a number of high-profile action/genre movies where it was hard to tell exactly what was happening. :wtf:

Maybe it's to make up for sloppy cinematography.

It was annoying. During the big fights there are always clouds of dust or fire or something to hide the action. Just laziness.
